openSUSE 12.1 RC2: How to upgrade Opera from 11.10 to 11.52?

Hello,

I have Opera 11.10 Build 2092 installed in opensuse 12.1 RC1 or perhaps in much earlier version. After updating from RC1 to RC2, YAST shows Opera 11.52 as the only and new version, i.e. in parentheses, to be installed if I wish.

I have been trying to remove existing Opera (11.10) as follows, without success:

#zypper remove opera
Loading repository data...
Reading installed packages...
Package 'opera' is not installed.
'opera' not found in package names. Trying capabilities.
No provider of 'opera' is installed.
Resolving package dependencies...

How do I uninstall Opera 11.10 and install Opera 11.52?

Thanks in advance.

Is Opera visible in Software Management?

You should be able to delete it there.

Or did you install opera outside of the .rpm method

*But won’t you be installing 12.1 final over the top very soon?

12.1 is not yet released - you should ask this question in the prerelease/
beta forum.

Thanks,

Hello caf4926,

A month or two ago I must have installed Opera 11.10 using the RPM method. Yesterday I noticed that under YAST -Software Management the only Opera shown available is the newer & security adjusted version 11.52. I would need help in uninstalling 11.10 before I can install 11.52. My current plan is just to “zypper up” (yes, this works) from RC2 to the final 12.1 version.

Hello Jim Henderson,

My apology for posting in the wrong sub-forum. Any chance to move this thread over to Beta/Pre-Release? Thanks!

If you installed an rpm it should show in Software Manager

Hello caf4926,

Originally I went to Opera’s download site to download the rpm file and install the browser for the first time via onscreen prompts. Yesterday when opening the browser I was advised that a security and stability update is available in version 11.52, and at the bottom of the dialog window Opera suggests that I follow the upgrade method of the installed Linux system. Anyway, the problem has been solved as follows:

  1. Download the new/update version 11.52 to ~/.opera/Temporary_Downloads

  2. Right click the file opera 11.52…rpm and choose open with “Add/Remove software”. Note that I first chose opening with Apper but got this error message: “KDEinit cannot locate the file” or something like that.

  3. YAST Software Repo & Software Management screens open up to facilitate installation. Pacman repo has to be enabled beforehand in order for Opera to be installed.

Now when I open the browser I got the latest version 11.52 whereas yesterday after installing directly via Software Management I got the older version 11.10 only.

I trust this info (Steps 1-3) is useful. Cheers!
