OpenSuse 12.1 nstallation process was stopped deadly

Hi,
I installed OpenSuse 12.1 (with English as installation language, KDE and without Home as separate partition)
and during installation process was stopped deadly with mesage like

“30%, left 2.272 ГБ, 717 packeges”
.

having disk:

# fdisk -l
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1 * 63 530144 265041 83 Linux
/dev/sda2 530208 50347709 24908751 7 HPFS/NTFS
/dev/sda3 50347710 976768064 463210177+ f W95 Ext'd (LBA)
/dev/sda5 50347773 54540674 2096451 82 Linux swap / Solaris
/dev/sda6 54540738 96389999 20924631 83 Linux
/dev/sda7 96390063 921472334 412541136 7 HPFS/NTFS
/dev/sda8 921472398 976768064 27647833+ 83 Linux

I installed “/” and loader to “/dev/sda8” partition

I looks like DVD image is ok, control sum is ok
I installed it under VMWare successfully.

I loaded iso file from here software.opensuse.org: Download openSUSE 12.1

In “/dev/sda8” partition I see in /var/log/ 2 none empty files faillog (2,5 Kib) and lastlog(29,9 Kib) - but trying to view them I see that they are filled with “00” symbols.
What is the problem?

If during installation there is some additive logging regim?

The fdisk command also gives the hard disk size and you seemed to cut that out of your message. Not sure what other Linux versions you have running, but the output of a terminal “df” command might be helpful to see partition size and space used/free. To load openSUSE from Logical Partition 8, you would either need to load the grub legacy boot loader into the MBR or you use the chainload command from another Linux version on the same disk. openSUSE 12.1 uses Grub Legacy while other versions might be using Grub 2. What did you do with the grub installation part for openSUSE 12.1 by chance?

Thank You,

Did you run the media check to be sure that the burn worked right? Did you burn to quality R/O media at the slowest speed?

I run checking Media menu Item, and it hung forever, without any error messages or DVD indicator blinking.
But As I wrote above I installed the system under VMWare successfully.
I think the speed was the highest for my DVD Writer, could it be reason of error?

During installation I select as root for OpenSuse “/dev/sda8” - 26 gb
In process of installation there is a choice to set “Home” as separate partition- I set this option off
I have now working Fedora 14(in “/dev/sda6”) and its loader in “/dev/sda1”.
When I installed Fedora or Mandriva with existing linux and its loader(just like now with Fedora in “/dev/sda6” and it loader in “/dev/sda1” ), I chose option to install loader in the same partition
as “/” of this linux. It worked fine - I have old loader in which I have to add several rows for loading of new system.
I try to make the same way with OpenSuse - is it possible that installation hung as root and loader are the same ?
During installation OpenSuse propose by default to install loader in “/dev/sda”. It seems to me rather risky, not to break my wworking partitions…
Will I have problems with setting loader into “/dev/sda” ?

df - shows only mouned partitions:

# df -HT
Filesystem Type Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/sda6 ext4 22G 9.2G 11G 46% /
tmpfs tmpfs 2.2G 2.2M 2.2G 1% /dev/shm
/dev/sda2 fuseblk 26G 23G 2.6G 91% /mnt/diskC_XP
/dev/sda7 fuseblk 423G 353G 70G 84% /mnt/diskD_Work
/dev/sdb3 fuseblk 51G 9.5G 42G 19% /mnt/diskE_Music

First, the df command did not show me sda8, perhaps because it is not mounted. You have to decide who will control your primary boot process. openSUSE 12.1 using grub legacy while Fedora uses Grub 2 as I recall. So, if I wanted to use Fedora as my boot master, you would need to force openSUSE to install grub and everything into /dev/sda8, a configuration that would not boot on its own. If you allow it to be placed into /dev/sda1 2 or 3 or into the MBR, you are saying that openSUSE will be the master, but then openSUSE needs to be loaded into one of the four root partitions, which can’t be done. Still don’t really know why openSUSE would abort during its install unless it can’t handle the configuration you are forcing it into. openSUSE handles single and dual booting with Windows just fine but anything else requires you understand how boot managers work and how to integrate several distro’s together.

Thank You,

No, I don’t think so. You can run the media check also inside vmware, it
would be equally valid.

You may have some hardware incompatibility.

OpenSuse 12.1 didnot installed on any partition…
But OpenSuse 12.2 ( openSUSE-DVD-Build0317-i586.iso ) I installed successfully…
Who tried it, how is it - that is not release?
