Opensuse 12.1: no mic input in skype

Did you try backing OFF of the capture levels to reduce the noise ?

What other forums ? What rpm packages are bad ?

If you believe there is a problem then IMHO the best way to get it fixed QUICKLY so that it works properly for you is to write a bug report on openSUSE-12.1. There is guidance here: openSUSE:Submitting bug reports - openSUSE You can log on to bugzilla using your openSUSE forum username and password.

Ensure you attach to your bug report the text file /tmp/alsa-info.txt that you get by running the command:

/usr/sbin/alsa-info.sh --no-upload

Do NOT reference this thread as the SuSE-GmbH packager will refuse to read a forum thread. The bug report needs to have all the relevant details. Then watch the thread daily for the SuSE-GmbH packagers response. Note they are also an alsa sound driver developer so any fix they come up with will benefit all GNU/Linux distributions.

Watch the bug report that you write carefully for a ‘NEED INFO’ flag. When you see that, answer the question the SuSE-GmbH packager asks. And then CLEAR the ‘NEED INFO’ flag. That is important. You MUST clear the flag.

Good luck.

me microphone does not function.
I think the problem is in file home/XXX/.pulse by deleting skype worked without problems, the problem is that the other does not play:(, restarting the file is reconstructed and it is reversed, in the original configuration microphone function for kde.

kalymnos77, skype DOES work for me in 11.4 and 12.1 with pulse audio. It works with both an external mic (plugged in a mic jack) and also with a USB webcam mic.

I provided advice in many posts above. I recommend you examine those and try the different suggestions.

thank you for your help speed re-reading your first post and applying the first solution it worked (I’m not englophone he saluted as I re-read 3 times to understand)I test several configuration module without finding the right. good night.

Thank-you for the first solution. I finally turned to this forum to search for a solution for my skype input audio problem uninstalling pavucontrol and re-installing it and running it at the same time as skype call testing services finally worked for me. I was pulling out my hair (not that I have much to begin with) and almost gave up on skype.

This is a kernel bug. Redhat fixed this already: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=742010

Same topic: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=121607&p=1

I did this on 12.1 (applying the patch, recompiling the kernel) and it worked. I hope Novell will apply the patches for major Logitech webcams soon.

Novell were bought by Attachmate and hence Novell are no longer involved inthe building of the openSUSE kernel. SuSE-GmH are an independant business unit of Attachmate (I believe) and hence they would be the one’s involved.

For users who have this hardware with this problem, I recommend a bug report be raised on openSUSE. There is guidance here for raising bug reports: openSUSE:Submitting bug reports - openSUSE One can use their openSUSE forum username and password when logging on to bugzilla. It is probably worth while including reference to the Red Hat bug report (and ArchLinux topic with the patch) in the openSUSE bug report. Monitor the bug report looking for a ‘NEED INFO’ flag. As soon as one observes that flag, answer the SuSE-GmbH packagers questions, and then CLEAR the ‘NEED INFO’ flag.

Good luck.

Hi, I have a Philips webcam -which includes a microphone recognised by
phonon- installed in 12.1 (64 bit). This worked in all previous opensuse
versions I installed.

The webcam works OK in Kamoso, and in the Options Test of Skype, but when
making a video call the USB sound is OK but the video does not work.
It seems that Skype cannot use the USB video and USB microphone devices at
the same time.
When I select a different audio device, the camera works (but of course I
have no sound).
As I said this setup worked fine before.

I deleted the .Skype folder and it makes no difference.
I do not have pulse audio installed.
The same problem happens in another computer with the same camera model.

Does anybody have a suggestion or some settings to tweak?
Thanks in advance

For users on this thread, don’t forget there is also a skype support forum: English - Skype Support Network

I was about to raise a bug report but someone has beaten me to it.
Bug 736093 - Logitech WebCam microphone produces squeaky “chipmunk” audio

Hopefully something will come out of it in due course.

Now I know even more so how good the openSUSE community is, after looking at that Skype support forum, there is a bug bunch of people here who go out of their way to help others. One day when I get some more experience I will do the same. Meanwhile I’m very glad I settled on openSUSE as my Linux distribution of choice. Thanks everyone.

I did

Now let’s draw attention to this …

upgrading to kernel 3.1.5-1-desktop x86_64 has fixed the problem for me as per the comment #6 in the above bug report

thank you thank you thank you

I have wrestled with audio on this toshiba tecra m9 running suse 12.1 and had failed miserably to get skype to capture sound, all that it “heard” was white noise

I installed pavucontrol as per your recommendation, changed to use front microphone (setting wasn’t found in any other mixer program I’d played with) and it magically began to work

So I had my first working skype call today!

thanks!
Paul

Thats good news and glad to read its working. Sometime AFTER this thread, I created a blog entry documenting some pulse audio basics with pavucontrol, including using it with Skype: Pulseaudio Basics for openSUSE with pavucontrol - Blogs - openSUSE Forums

pavucontrol - set front microphone

I had to restart and then it worked.

Thank you very much.
