When I boot with openSUSE 12.1 x86_64 DVD and select “Install” at the bootloader menu, most of the times (~ 9 out of 10) I get stuck with a black screen, but ~ 1 out of 10 times the graphical installer loads properly. Instead, booting with the “nomodeset” as suggested in the release notes works like a charm.
The same problem has been discussed in this thread, but without getting to a solution. Here it is guessed that the problem is a race condition in the loading of modules. If I install with “nomodeset” I will fall back to fbdev, so I was wondering whether there is a fix that would allow me to use kms instead. Any suggestion?
This is my hardware:
lspci | grep GM965
00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation Mobile PM965/GM965/GL960 Memory Controller Hub (rev 03)
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)
00:02.1 Display controller: Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)
I’ve not installed yet, but I could, with “nomodeset”. I was wondering whether there is a way to install with kms, or, if not, whether there is a way to fix the problem after the installation in order to use kms instead than fbdev. This is the relevant output of lspci -nnk from my perfectly working openSUSE 11.3
