From what you write -no minimize/maximize buttons- I get that you installed GNOME3, or at least are landing there. If XFCE is installed, you should see it when logging out. In the login screen click your useraccount’s name, and an option “Sessions” will appear. Select XFCE, enter your password and off you go.
If XFCE is not installed, start Yast - Software - Softwaremanagement, select the Patterns view, and tick the XFCE patterns. That will install what you need for running XFCE, and it should be shown in the Sessions.
In GNOME3 to get Parcelite working do Alt-F2, type “gnome-session-manager” and create an entry for Parcelite to start with the desktop. For now you can start it by Alt-F2, type “parcelite” hit enter. If you move the mouse cursor to the bottom right you should see the icon.
As we can not read your thoughts, please explain what you did.
When using YaST > Software > Software management, choose the Patterns from View end you will see XFCE somewhere there.
BTW, when you have more questions, you better start more threads, each with a telling Title in the correct (sub)forum. That will bring you more attention fron the right people to the right problem. And it will avoid the mess of answers you will get here, where you probably will not know at the end which answer is for which problem (in any case many here will not and thus skip this thread ).
If I am understanding you correctly, you did a clean install of opensSUSE 12.1 and you can’t find xfce in the selection
If you are using the dvd iso there is a third option after kde and gnome which I think says “other” or something
That is where you will be able to find xfce etc.
If I was wrong with my first assumption, you were able to find xfce and successfully installed it side by side with another DE
If xfce was installed and if you are not using automatic login, there is a button under the login prompt that you can click and
choose what environment do you want to use.
It will show up in LXDE, XFCE and gnome-fallback. If you comment out the first line (in red), you can also use it in gnome-shell. The icon won’t appear on the top taskbar but on the bottom bar when you place the cursor on it.
Many thanks to you all, and I’ve taken on board all the points you make.
I’ll give them all a try and see where i get to.
“I’ll be Back” as the saying goes, but next time in the right threads
