openSUSE 12.1 install fails before welcome screen

I downloaded the 64-bit DVD version through metalink.
The boot screen shows up, but whether I select check installation media or installation, it loads a linuxrc kernal (version 3.5.15) that then asks me to put in the disk (which is already in the drive) and then complains that it can’t find the media.
Thanks for your help!

Hardware you are trying to install on? That is certainly not normal behavior

To me this looks like a download corruption. What you can do is check the ISO’s md5sum and compare it to the one on the download site. Should be exactly the same. If not, redownload.

Download corruption using metalinks is impossible. But burn corruption is
possible.

My processor is an Intel i5.
How would I check for burn corruption? I’ll try reburning the disk.
Thank you.

Most burning software have the option to check the result after the burn.

Don’t reburn, check. What I do is:

cmp --bytes=$(wc -c <$1) /dev/dvd $1

where $1 is the path to the ISO file.

i agree with that!

but, if after checking you find the disk is bad, then check the iso
using the md5 of sha1 checks explained on
http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Download_help

then, once you are certain you have a good iso, then burn at the slowest
possible burn rate onto good media (the big stacks of 50 for $5 being
sold on street corners is not the one to use)…

then, try self testing the disk with check installation media…

on the other hand–sure would be nice to know more about your
hardware…does it meet the mins given here:

Provided he did download using metalinks as he claims, the step is redundant.

The OP would be #>1000 calling it metalinks where ordiary download through the website was meant. I tend to ignore “metalink”.

not if a near light speed proton from a solar flare flipped a critical 1
to an incorrect 0
