I have been using Opensuse 12.1 for around 7 months now.
Sometimes while working on the laptop, the OS just hangs up and I am presented with a blank screen(each time of a different colour). I cannot do anything to recover from it and am forced to hard boot it again losing any data I was working on.
I have read a few other posts which rendered the system unusable but were not having the same situation with some weird colour plastered all over my screen.
I need to know why this happens and what I need to do to provide any information to the guys in the forums to come to the root of this.

i see (in the forum history) that you installed that driver back in July
2012: have you been having the blank (colored) screen problem ever
since? or was everything great for a while and suddenly it went sour?
in either event i can’t offer help better than suggesting you attract
the attention of please_try_again to this thread…maybe PM him and ask
him to look in on: http://forums.opensuse.org/showthread.php?t=477916
This issue is intermittent. I had this even before the re-installation of the driver using the atiupgrade script.
I encounter this once in a blue moon. But when it does happen I dont have any other option than to hard boot.
Well, I’m quite familiar with this issue on my dell laptop with ATI graphics. Try uninstalling ATI proprietary or legacy driver if you have installed. This generally happens when radeon driver is not blacklisted before installing ATI catalyst.
I have uninstalled the proprietary/legacy drivers and installed 12.4 catalyst, but still happens sometimes. Do you happen to remember if any particular application was running when this happened?
