opensuse 12.1: Cannot print out file /boot/grub/menu.lst

Hello,

I have a multiboot system which has opensuse, win 7 and other linuxes. In 11.4 KDE, as root I can edit and print the file /boot/grub/menu.lst.

However, in 12.1 KDE, I can edit the same file but cannot print it out. I need the print copy for references.

Any suggestions? Thanks a lot for your help.

So, I found the very same issue as you state taytong888 . It is a very odd problem, but I was able to determine it is a KDE problem with KDE text editors, kwrite and Kate which are both affected. However, I got gedit (from gnome) and leafpad both to work like this in KDE:

Alt-F2 then enter: kdesu leafpad /boot/grub/menu.lst

This did print even as kwrite and kate would not even as both could print other documents. I suggest you post a bug report for openSUSE 12.1 though I feel it is some sort of KDE oddity you have run in to. If you don’t want to (post the report), let me know.

But, you are not crazy (or you are as bad as I am). lol!

Thank You,

Hello James,

I installed leafpad and was able to print the file as you suggested. How did you find out it was a KDE problem? I spent some time (re)configuring the printer and googling!

What lead me to this problem:

  1. Updated to kernel 3.2xx (don’t remember exact version) in 11.4 via zypper up 2 days ago
  2. Reinstalled nvidia “the hard way”, i.e. a la openSUSE (I did this scores of time > experienced!)
  3. Kept seeing text instead of KDM login page

I decided to fresh install 12.1 over the old 11.4 partition because I can’t fix the problem in #3 above. For now, I want to stay safe with “nouveau” my “new” love!

Could you file the bug report on KDE not being able to print menu.lst file?

Thanks a lot for all your help.

If you do

cat /boot/grub.menu.lst

Copy the contents of the terminal and paste it to a new file in /home/*username
Then try printing it…? (I didn’t try this myself yet)

taytong888 , I just followed your lead and saw this was a problem. I even tried caf4926 suggestions before it was posted, but it is as if something in the document keeps it from printing in kwrite and kate. I have no idea, but there are lots of editors to try not tied to KDE and that is where I found the solution. I will post a bug report on this issue.

I actually tried this: sudo cat /boot/grub/menu.lst > ~/menu.lst

But the file would not print in kate or kwrite even as the file said it belong to me now and I did not need to load it as root. I just don’t know what it means is wrong but it seems to be a KDE issue of some sort. Give it a try on Tuesday and be amazed at the oddity it is.

Thank You,

Hello

I have openSusr 12.2 and i couldn’t find menu.ls when i enter the boot file there is no grub folder!!!

12.2 uses grub2, and what does this have to do with the original post from a year and a half ago? Are you also having printing issues?

sorry :’( i just want to modify the menu.lst
i couldn’t find grub nor grub2 under the boot i used Gnome by the way
because i want to add some Xen configuration

For openSUSE 12.2, we have moved to Grub 2. Have a look at the following bash script for help.

GNU Grub2 Command Help/Config Editor - Version: 1.94: https://forums.opensuse.org/blogs/jdmcdaniel3/gnu-grub2-command-listing-helper-help-input-106/

Thank You,
