OpenSuse 11 - xorg crashes after update

Hi, my problem is that recently after I installed security update to xorg provided by Suse Updater my x-windows cannot wake up.

I tried to reinstall all x11 pattern but the same.
It looks like error initializing runlevel 5 and I receive
fatal error: no screens found.

Any ideas?

This is the same problem I am having.</a>

It looks like package bug.But how to fix it?
I cannot find proper options in sysconfig

I will try this and check.

This may or may not work:
At the boot screen thype the numeral 1 and press enter. That should get you into runlevel 1 console where you log in as root. Try these things one after the othe,m then next one aftyer the previous one fails:

  1. sax2
  2. startx
  3. sax2 -m 0=vesa
  4. sax2 -a
  5. sax2 -r

I have graphical boot screen with 3 options:
Suse 11
Suse 11 failsave
Windows XP

so where press the number 1?

I checked your methods…and it doesn’t work.

I don’t think run level 1 is at a sufficient level to run X without more commands (or am I wrong). Is it not better to try this from run level 3 ? i.e. instead of typing “1”, type “3”.

There are also other sax2 options, that one can get from running:
man sax2
man sax2.man (1) - SuSE advanced X11 configuration, a complete module based X11 configurator - Linux Manual - Digipedia

For example,
sax2 -l
will load a very low res (640x480 I think) X which can be useful for an initial setup if the higher resolutions are causing problems. With that loaded, one can used easier to follow GUI tools to sort one’s graphical problems.

and finally, if one has multiple graphic devices, then one may need to type “sax2 -m 1=vesa” instead. One can check out how their graphic devices are assigned by typing:
sax2 -p

I forgot to mention. After configuring with “sax2 somevalue”, one must then exit root permissions (by typing “exit”) and then type “startx” to test X window.

Sometimes I take these commands for granted, and forget not everyone may know this.

Hm…the same happened.
I cannot cut+paste from console error text however it looks also like runlevel 5 initialization is a problem.

Two things may be applicable to your problem:

  1. You have installed proprietary drivers from ATI or nVidia.
  2. Your configuration files concerning X might have been thrashed up.

Note that is a lower case “L” (“L” for low resolution) and not a “one” (1).

Runlevel 1 is fine. The command startx/whatever – takes to a different level.

Beyo@

Boot into runlevel 3. At the prompt, “su” to root. “cd” to the /etc/X11 directory. Do a “ls xorg*” and you should see at least two configuration files, xorg.conf which is the one being used by X and xorg.conf.backup. Use “more” to read the contents of each file; compare them very carefully. It is possible that the update somehow damaged the xorg.conf file. If you see any differences, or even if you don’t but want to try this anyway, replace xorg.conf with the backup, this way: “mv xorg.conf xorg.conf.replaced” and “mv xorg.conf.backup xorg.conf”. Then do “startx”.

You can also check the X log for hints of the problem. Do a “cd /var/log” and then “more Xorg.0.log”.

You’re problem could be elsewhere in the runlevel 5 initialization scripts, but the “no screens found” error sounds like a configuration problem with the X server.

I cannot boot to level 3. I have only 2 options on Booting Suse - normal and failsafe. There is no way to provide that i want level 3.

My previously working xorg.conf

I cannot paste Xorg.0.log because there is char limit on this forum.

Try selected extracts (toward the end) in:

Ok I put my Xorg.0.log on

The “Boot Options” box below the list is where you type additional kernel parameters. That’s where you put the “3”.

Your logfile indicates that the driver is failing on AIGLX. You must have that turned on for Compiz Fusion, right? We really need to see your current xorg.conf file, too. Please post that back like you did the other.

You could try this quick-and-dirty fix: Boot into init 3. Use nano (or pico) to edit xorg.conf. Comment out (with #) the “Option: AIGLX” line in ServerFlags. Now try to startx. If this works, we can go from there.

Nano (and pico) are simple command-line editors. If you don’t have one, at the command line as root do:

zypper install nano

My current xorg.conf is presented few posts above
