I have paerformed regular openSUSE 11 update via YaST2 - online update. Now my X11 server will not start again, I have installed latest ATI drivers, reinstalling kernel again, reinstalling X11 again but no success.
I have considered openSUSE best of all distros, but now this has now happened too many times, I cannot get my X11 up again. Does anyone at openSUSE even bother to check what is released to the public at all?
Seems like this disto is getting worse and worse. Can someone at least be so kind and help me start my X11 again. It wouldn’t even
start when using radeon opensource driver.
If I cannot fix this I am switching to more stable and carefull distro. I use my laptop for business purposes and I cannot afford to have it broken every second upgrade.
I think the problem is that the ATI driver you installed was for your previous kernel version. When your kernel was updated, this created a mismatch between your kernel and your video driver.
So there are several solutions,
1.) Go back to the open source radeon driver (in text mode run sax2 -r -m 0=radeon)
2.) Uninstall the previous ATI driver in Yast and replace it with one the matches your present kernel
3.) Uninstall your present driver in Yast and run the installer from the ATI site, which will build a driver that matches your current kernel (be sure to install C++ Development and Kernel Development package groups first).
Well I deleted fglrx driver from my computer, then started sax2 and X server came online. Then I build package for my openSUSE 11 with ati installer, but built driver is obviously faulty. X server cannot get up.
Where to get functional ATI drivers? I installed 8.8.

The only files I have got to work with the latest fglrx driver are :-
Definitely it is not ATI. Yesterday I am update my openSUSE 11 64bit KDE 4 and when restarted it crashed.
It kept complain that plasma Dashboard have fatal error… screen went black. In first moment I was thinking that my Nvidea 8500 512mb is died because here in OZ we have 10 C above average. I am tried to repair, rescue ,upgrade but not… I was not able to get it running.
I am re-install (lost everything-NOT HAPPY).
It worked… To make shore that it is ok i am restarted few times , then i am updated all aps and it crashed again after restart.:’(
I was thinking may be KDE problem. Again re do it but this time I am installed Gnome , and same story, everything worked until update, and this time on Gnome it give me message about X11.
I love openSUSE but some times I am thinking about moving to other distro . Please do not do updates like this.:’(
