Often when installing openSUSE it is useful to check the HCL (hardware compatibility list) for openSUSE. In the case of your laptop: HCL/Laptops/IBM - openSUSE
where you one can read this comment for the R61:
When installing 10.3 choose 800x600 or 1024x768 (change to 1280x1024 later).
That comment was for 10.3, but it stands to reason one may need to do something similar for 11.0.
You really must:
a. do the md5sum check before burning to CD, and
b. do the media check after your installation CD is burned.
If your CD is good (and hence if your install is good) you should be able to boot to a text login, login as a regular user, and then adjust your graphics with the appropriate program. You will learn a bit by doing this.
Although IMHO it would never have come to this if you had ensured the md5sum checks were good, the media check ok, and installed at 800x600 (or 1024x768) per the hcl (and then increased the resolution later).
Best of luck and wishes for success in your efforts.
