Opensuse 11 Problems

Right ive had a long battle to install os11 and os10.3

i wont go into a huge detail because it then confuses some people to whats actually going on so…

im trying to install opensuse 11 + kde 3.5.9 on a Lenovo r61i laptop. The HDD is completely Clean nothing on it ,so os11 can use the hole HDD.

It installs and allows me to run all the config and after succesful installtion i do a restart

and all as i get is a black screen with a cursor flashing in the top corner. and it sits there forever

—I have previously has 10.3 working on this machine until i decided to update to 11 and now 11 and 10.3 just go to this black screen

anybody got any ideas

try failsafe option if you haven’t already, look for error messages as it loads
report back

Try failsafe; do you get to a prompt? Can you boot into Rescue from the DVD, or from the Live-CD?

sometimes i can boot into the rescue system which gives me a prompt.

sometimes i get a screen sayung installation error in a red box and then i get like an options menu

if i can get a prompt what can i do from there

Often when installing openSUSE it is useful to check the HCL (hardware compatibility list) for openSUSE. In the case of your laptop:
HCL/Laptops/IBM - openSUSE

where you one can read this comment for the R61:

When installing 10.3 choose 800x600 or 1024x768 (change to 1280x1024 later).
That comment was for 10.3, but it stands to reason one may need to do something similar for 11.0.

Reference md5sum and pre-installation precautions, our forum team created a stickie to help provide guidance:
NEWBIES - Suse-11.0 Pre-installation – PLEASE READ - openSUSE Forums

You really must:
a. do the md5sum check before burning to CD, and
b. do the media check after your installation CD is burned.

If your CD is good (and hence if your install is good) you should be able to boot to a text login, login as a regular user, and then adjust your graphics with the appropriate program. You will learn a bit by doing this.

Although IMHO it would never have come to this if you had ensured the md5sum checks were good, the media check ok, and installed at 800x600 (or 1024x768) per the hcl (and then increased the resolution later).

Best of luck and wishes for success in your efforts.
