So can we assume this means the openSUSE 11.4 upgrade went well for you? If so, we are happy to hear of your success. Please, if you do run into any issues, just ask for help if you need it and good luck.

Thank You,

Good for you, and welcome to the forum. What’s the question?

Hi,

Updating on 64bit PC went without a hitch. My experience on old 32bit is as follows.

If anyone has googleearth running ok, i would appreciate some help.

Blog (summary of events),

  1. installed new from DVD with reformatting of partitions
  2. PC would not boot up openSUSE 11.4 (i586)
    PC stopped with message ,
    “initrd /boot/initrd-2.6.37-1-1.2-desktop
error 28 Selected item cannot fit into memory”
  3. booted into recovery mode via DVD
    mounted ‘/’ partition
    no /etc/X11/xorg.conf found, only xorg.conf.install
in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/50-device.conf, deleted ‘#’ from line ‘#Driver “radeon”’
  4. PC rebooted ok to normal user gui KDE4.6.0 screen but PC restarts after 2 second
  5. selected ‘safe mode’ and PC booted ok into terminal mode
  6. rebooted and removed nomodeset from cmd line, ok into gui safe mode
  7. dual monitors setup via -System Settings --Display and Monitor
  8. after 2 or 3 reboots, changes made were recognised, normal user mode still unstable
  9. removed all pulseaudio packages not affecting dependencies to stop interference with plasmoids
  10. rebooted into safe mode, noticed no changes had been made to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/50-xxx files. Replaced these files with old openSUSE 11.3 (i586) files from backup
  11. rebooted to KDE4.6.0, much better but still unstable
  12. added repos and installed KDE4.6.1 and Linux 2.6.38-18-desktop i686 via yast
  13. rebooted to KDE4.6.1 ok
    -sound ok
-kaffeine ok, DVD’s and music files and CD’s
    -libreoffice ok
    -digikam ok
    -firebox ok, beta version,
-googleearth, installed ok but hangs during start, lsb 4.0-12.1installed, still playing with this

No question, just a comment.

They are here, as many work towards the goal of good solid programs for open source.

Yes the upgrade went well. I have upgraded 3 machines, one being a IBM laptop R40.

The only issue I have seen was on the postgresql upgrade, and that has been solved. Which of course is not an OpenSuse issue.
