I am happy to report you were absolutely right. I found another laptop that had the same drive, swapped it out, and it works perfectly. I will be getting it replaced, and am terribly sorry to have wasted your time, as well as that of others. Thank you very much for taking the time to assist me. Similar support from Microsoft would have cost me several hundred dollars for what probably would have been the wrong answer.
