openSuSe 11.4 on Dell Latitude D610 - DVD function doesn't work

New to Suse, years since I messed with Linux (Red Hat was last go). Have done pretty well, found out how to get the wireless Broadcom to work, going well.

The DVD had never been recognized…CD functions fine, no DVD support. Anyone know where/how i can get that to work? Googled until my eyes hurt…

Linux command is rusty, so specific instructions are appreciated…thnx

When you say it “doesn’t work”, what specifically doesn’t work? Does it
read DVD data discs, but not play DVD videos?

I’ve got a D610 right here with a DVD drive in it, and it works fine with
11.4 (the drive is, however, just a DVD-ROM drive and not a CD-RW/DVD-ROM
drive, I’ll have to see if I have one of those as I have 3 of these
laptops to hand at the moment).

to be specific, NO DVD will play. It didn’t work upon installation from DVD boot, and doesn’t work post installation. Will not read data DVD, no DVD video. Will read CD just fine. When viewing properties, it says “unknown type (application/octet-stream)”.

Thanks for the reply and I hope to hear back!!

Please read the following instructions under the openSUSE 11.4 section below:

What do you see with the lspci and lsscsi commands?

Indeed, that was my first thought, but as he can’t read data DVDs, it
seems the issue isn’t to do with restricted formats.

I’m not really sure on what the user wants… But this is what I can say:

The drive is a Philips OEM Combo, which is capable of reading and writing CD’s and only reading DVD’s. The media supported is pretty much everything that is around.
Since the user reports that the CD works fine, than it suggests that the system is picking it up properly. So, leads to another problem…

When a normal DATA DVD is inserted (imagine a Windows Game) what happens? Can you browser through the files?

In case you don’t… does the DVD stops spinning? Does it keep spinning without stop?

Or in another perspective… you can’t play DVD media (because you are missing libdvdcss, not shipped with openSUSE or any other mainstream distro)?

I have tried to read DVD’s that work fine in another computer, but it will not read on this PC with Suse loaded. The drive spins up and tries to read DVD, but fails. CDs work fine with no problem. The utilities loaded with Suse do not work with the drive either, particularly when trying to burn with the drive. I would say Suse still does not have the right drivers, or it is not loaded properly in some way.

i went into YaST2 control center, hardware info and noticed this setting: notready: yes
would this be the cause? if so, how can i change that?

That wouldn’t cause this issue - it just means that there’s nothing in
the drive.

When you put a disc in the drive, what shows up in /var/log/messages?

Based on this and what you’re seeing in /proc/sys/dev/cdrom/info (which
says it can read DVDs), I’m thinking this is a hardware fault. Is the
system a dual-boot system?

no it is not set as a dual boot system. I got this system from Intechra with no OS installed, only BIOS. I purchased media from godboxslx to ensure good media…this laptop has not been able to read a dvd from the very start. I had to download live cd to get the OS installed. even after install, it still will not read dvd.

This makes it sound more like a hardware issue. You might check with the
place you bought it from if they can check the drive and/or replace it.

Was it a used system?

if it were a hardware problem, i would think the CD wouldn’t work either. Reads CD’s just fine…it’s the DVD it can’t read. i can hear it trying to ready it over and over…just no luck.

It is a used system i got through an employee purchase program to buy equipment after it has been refreshed. Intechra tests all machines to ensure they function properly. I bought another one for my son and should get it in a week. it’s the same model and same drive…we’ll know more then as to hardware fault or not.

UPDATE
i have been putting in every data DVD and movie DVD i can find, and found one that loaded! (it’s a “how to” video for our Cuisinart!) it loads the dvd, launches the viewer, but then tells me i don’t have permission to view. I’m now starting to think it has something to do with software loaded to access dvd. I followed instructions from a previous thread and loaded packman, not sure what to do next. However, i think we have now ruled out hardware issue.

I don’t think hardware has been ruled out - drive alignment issues can
cause the type of thing you’re seeing - and I’ve seen many laptops with
drive alignment issues with the CD/DVD drives where intermittent failures
occur (I used to teach on laptops that were shipped around the US).

Drive alignment doesn’t have to be as precise for CDs as for DVDs because
DVDs pack more data in than CDs. So CDs tend to be more tolerant of
alignment issues and will, by their very nature, show a higher success
rate.

That you had problems even installing from the openSUSE DVD you purchased
tells me that this is not a software problem. If it were a software
problem, the install DVD would have booted without any issues - but you
said that it wouldn’t even boot. That means the software that you’re
suspecting of being a problem wasn’t even running.

I would take it back to the company that refurbished it and have them
test the drive in another system. As I’ve said previously, I’ve got at
least 3 D610s here at home and I’ve never had this type of issue with any
of them running any release of openSUSE.

well i’m a bit confused…i did finally get the dvd to play after Suse instructed me that it needed some software. i got beyond the permission issue and the Cuisinart dvd will play, and i can interact with it (it prompts you for language, etc.). I thought i was in the clear, ran some other dvd’s, they still don’t work. feel like this is a lost cause at this point. :’(

Some discs are less touchy about that alignment issue than others - it
depends on how they’re pressed, how much data is involved, if it’s a
burned disc (which tend to have a shorter shelf-life and the dyes used
can vary dramatically in terms of readability in a drive).

I can only again suggest that you go back to the place that refurbished
the machine and have them swap the drive out with a known good one or try
your drive in another system that is known to work with its drive.

The drives also can be had fairly inexpensively (probably through eBay),
though the quality would probably vary depending on the seller.
