Friends, I came across new issue, that really bothers me.
On fresh install of 11.4 everything worked fine, but after some updates networkmanager stopped working properly on my netbook (intel atom n270 based).
When I log in, network manager shows that networking is disabled and I can’t connect. Checking/unchecking the checkbox does nothing. All settings in Yast are OK.
To make it work, I run “/etc/init.d/network restart” and then plug in the wire OR (in case of wireless connection) I restart network from console, unchecck and check the checkbox in networkmanager and only then it starts to work as it should.
Anyone?
P.S.
Noted that issue on several attempts to install 11.4 on my netbook.
I installed opensuse 11.4 from DVD (32bit), added 1 extra user, installed IBUS instead of SCIM, updated LibreOffice, updated system, Configured NFS client - nothing related to network manager or network devices and no problems so far.
Suddenly NM stopped working properly (shows that networking is disabled) - now I have to restart network manually each time I boot the system and only then it starts to work OK - right as it should.
Switching to plasmoid does not help.
As to output of that command - it’s nothing. NM just quits without any messages.
Can you change your network from NetworkManager or Plasmoid to traditional ifup/ifdown ? Just to see if the network boots itself always after reboot.
Any interesting messages in /var/log/[K|N]etworkManager or dmesg ?
Just out of curiosity,
Have you re-checked your YAST > System Services (runlevel) > Advanced > Network
(and other network related services)
to verify that each are
Current State is “Running”
Configured to start on bootup
It does sound to me you’re describing a situation where the Network Manager is not functional because the underlying networking services aren’t started, but once you’ve started then Network Manager works. As you’ve noted, I would guess changing the Network Manager isn’t going to help, but if you do find something useful in your “messages” file I’m sure it would be extremely helpful… But I’m going to guess that would be problematical now since you’ve likely booted/rebooted your system many, many times since you first noticed your problem.
Exactly, the problem appears to be in switched off networking service, which is very strange.
I’ve checked runlevels and networking is enabled on 3 and 5, but doesn’t actually start. Are these values normal?

Nothing interesting, except for networkmanager log
NetworkManager[2051]: <info> Networking is enabled by state file
Not sure the meaning of that last entry in your networkmanager.log, but
Can you verify that Network Manager is enabled (and not “classic IFUP/IFDOWN”) in your YAST Networking Services?
I had a similar problem with networkmanager in 11.1. I’m sure that after some update, NM stopped connecting. I uninstalled/installed NetworkManager, etc. /var/log/messages/ showed that NM was starting every time I made a change but it wasn’t connecting. When I switched to classic IFUP/IPDOWN I got connected. Never resolved the NM issue,

check your /var/log/message when system boots and see if any error
regarding grup-set-default not in path.

i had the same issue on a migrated 11.3 to 11.4 install. First, it was
booting to bash prompt and i had to manually type kdm to start kde
session. Then i could log in into kde but networkmanager was not
working. I had to manually run rcnetwork restart. After google it i saw
that the grub-set-default was related to grub 2.0 that i did not have
install so i went to yast and installed grub 2.0 and reboot. Now on my
boot menu, i’ve got a new entry for grub 2.0 but i just used the normal
one the opensuse-xxx-desktop, as always, and kde started with no issues
and networkmanager was working fine. That was 2 days ago and i did not
have any further issues after all.
HI,
I have the same problem on 3 laptops both 32 and 64 bits.
Each start the network is disabled. I go to YAST> check/uncheck and click ok to retart the network. Then it works
switch to plasmoid-networkmanager (it works a bit better in this case)
add to sudo settings in yast “/etc/init.d/network” with parameter “restart”, so that normal users could restart network without root password.
test if it works: as normal user “sudo /etc/init.d/network restart”. (disregard that 30sec connection attempts). If it doesn’t work - check sudo settings.
If it is OK, add this into simple script to /home/~profile~/.kde4/Autostart (if you’re using KDE)
Reboot and check. The network should work OK after a few seconds after login (probably, you will have to check “enable networking” in NM).
I know this is rather stupid and straight-forward workaround, but it really helps to save lots of time
Well, for those of you still experiencing this problem, you should either open up a bugzilla report and/or search bugzilla to see if this issue is open/worked.
Post appropriate bug report numbers here and in related threads.
Everyone can append their circumstances to the bug report. The more the merrier and hopefully faster attention.
