@larry:
I opened up /etc/sysconfig editor in YAST and entered rt2800pci in the BLANK field of MODULES_LOADED_ON_BOOT, etc… After reboot:
02:06.0 Network controller [0280]: RaLink RT2800 802.11n PCI [1814:0601]
Subsystem: RaLink Device [1814:2860]
Kernel driver in use: rt2800pci
then I edited the wireless connection using ifup. Under Hardware tab I saw Module name =rt2800pci. However, under Udev Rule, Device Name wlan0 is greyed out.
Reboot again, still no wireless.

Why are you using ifup rather than network manager?
Hi caf4926,
Yesterday afternoon I did use NM, but it either crashed or does not allow me to specify the choice of interface wlan0. As a matter of fact, it still shows “(restricted to interface:)any” instead of “wlan0” when I used NM 2 minutes ago. In short, I use ifup as the main tool to set up wireless, then NM to double check.
I’d probably myself setup a new test user login and try the network manager
In kde I use the plasmoid network manager
I even know some have resorted to using the gnome version in kde.
Larry might be able to help further than that.
Hello caf4926,
When my wireless was working with kernel driver rt2860, I was using networkmanager-gnome in KDE. Last night I opened up NM configuration settings trying to change from “restricted to ANY interface”, which is the only available, to “wlan0”, but then somehow the wireless tab disappeared.
Do you know how I can get the wireless tab back? I tried un-installing then re-installing NM but still no go.
Right now in my 11.4 KDE_64 partition, YAST Software Management shows the following installed packages and their version numbers:
- NM 0.8.2-15.24.1
- NM-glib 0.8.2-15.24.1
- NM-gnome 0.8.2-9.10.1
- NM-kde4-libs 0.9.1git20110911-2.2
- NM-kde4-libs-lang 09.1git-20110911-2.2
- NM-openvpn 0.8.2-6.1
- NM-openvpn-gnome 0.8.2-6.1
- NM-openvpn-kde4 0.9.1git20110911-2.2
- NM-openvpn-lang 0.8.2-6.1
- NM-pptp 0.8.2-4.1
- NM-pptp-gnome 0.8.2-4.1
- NM-pptp-kde4 0.9.1git20110911-2.2
- NM-pptp-lang 0.8.2-4.1
- NM-vpnc 0.8.2-4.1
- NM-vpnc-gnome 08.2-4.1
- NM-vpnc-kde4 0.9.1git20110911-2.2
- NM-vpnc-lang 0.8.2-4.1
- plasmoidnetworkmanagement 0.9.1git20110911-2.1
I would rather use only one version of NM that is working. The rest is probably added by the system.
Did you try a new user login
What exactly has happened to you wireless tab, I can’t really say.

Your iwconfig output showed that the wireless was associated with the AP. If you
did not have a connection at that point, the problem was with routing or DNS.
Please post the output of ‘/sbin/route -n’ and the non-comment portion of ‘cat
/etc/resolv.conf’.
Hello Larry,
# /sbin/route -n

IP/DNS of my router is 192.168.1.1
I have been using static IP instead of DHCP for wireless connection.

@lwfinger & caf4926,
I just got wireless connection back by simply unchecking “change default route via DHCP” in ifup, because I assign a static IP to my connection. Duh!
After reboot, the wireless tab re-appears in NM configuration window.
Now, even if I switch from ifup to NM, the NM icon doesn’t show in the system bar in the lower right corner. Can you show me how?
Thanks a lot for your help.

KDE or Gnome? If KDE, use ‘ps ax’ to make certain that NM is running. Then go to
the add widgets function and add the “Network Management” widget.
@lwfinger:
KDE 64bit. Got it, thanks Larry!
