Hey guys!
I love OpenSUSE, but since 11.3, when i first tried it with my brand new laptop, i have had Wireless issues.
If i try to use KNetworkManager, i click on it in the panel, then tick “Enable Wireless”, it is automatically unchecked. I can make a connection with the NM settings, but no change.
I enable ifup in YaST after being informed on the opensuse irc that it seems to work better with ath9k, I configure ifup in YaST, it finds my Network, unlike NM, i give it all the details, and it sets it up for me. However, i end up in the same place, except this time, in my panel i have 2 red X’s, overlapping, and again, i have no connection!
I do not have OpenSUSE installed on this system since i do not install any Linux distro without making sure all hardware works correctly…
Any help will be appreciated, thanks

The Wireless Chipset: Atheros AR5B97
Please paste the output of
/sbin/lspci -nnk
I’ve got :
2:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Atheros Communications Inc. AR9285 Wireless Network Adapter (PCI-Express) [168c:002b] (rev 01)
Subsystem: AzureWave Device [1a3b:1089]
Kernel driver in use: ath9k
And wireless works flawlessly for me in openSUSE 11.3 and 11.4 using NetworkManager. The check box is probably disabled because of rfkill. You must get the following for the wireless to work :
grzes@opensuse:~> rfkill list all
0: phy0: Wireless LAN
Soft blocked: no
Hard blocked: no
Best regards,
Greg
Thanks for replying Greg

I also ran rfkill list all, but ended up with the “If this is not a typo…” error, might be because it was in a live enviroment.
Thanks
You need to install it. Connect with a wire and use this command :
sudo zypper in rfkill
Best regards,
Greg
I am unable to connect with a wire, due to certain reasons i will not explain here Is there an RPM from the build service that i can install in the live enviroment?
Thanks
I have an ATH9K card. I aslo use Sony Ericsson K800i as mobile broadband connection. For both KNetworkMAnager and Plasmoid are rubbish. Only the GNOME nm-applet works perfectly. Here I’ve made a guide, how to make it work on KDE4!
I will appreciate any comments, if you still have questions, please comment, I will try to help.

NM-Applet works for me just fine under any desktop enviroment, just, every reboot, i have to tick “Enable Wireless”, at least its getting somewhere…
Gave up Knetworkmanager. Made Networkmanager-GNOME work on KDE4! - check this out. Don’t use KNM/PNM. Nm-applet made me access my mobile-broadband. For other puzzled users it made suddenly wifi work AT ALL!!
EDIT: Look at the chat log. KNM/PNM probably even cripples ifup (!?). openSUSE starter: Comment on wifi in openSUSE 11.4!
hi in my opensuse terminal its shoing as below

Soft blocked: yes
Hard blocked: yes
1: dell-bluetooth: Bluetooth

This thread was about a problem with openSUSE 11.4. Are you really using
that old version?
Is is normally better to start a new thread unless you are absolutely
sure your problem is the same one.
