openSUSE 11.4 Installation - Confirmation

Completed installation of opensuse 11.4 KDE AMD64 and followed the advise in this thread by oldcpu and caf4926

Q1. Am i correct to assume that I’ve in fact installed ALL these ?

The Packman project provides four repositories that may be added individually:

Essentials: provides codecs and audio and video player applications, to fulfil the most essential needs
Multimedia: contains many more multimedia related applications
Extra: additional non multimedia related applications, mostly network related
Games: obviously, games

Q2. Any links to installing CJK input?

Q3. Believe I’ve got a basic working system, any recommendations to add?

For completeness, I’ve also install Nvidia using “The_repository_way”](SDB:NVIDIA drivers - openSUSE Wiki)

The way to find out is to type in a terminal (and post here the output):

zypper lr -d

(thats a lower case “L” above). that will provide a detailed list of the repositories that you have added so we can make the assessment you asked for.

many … :slight_smile: … First and foremost, keep your repositories to a bare minimum. If you add more there is a risk of instability for new users and inexperienced average users. Even long-in-the-tooth average users like myself (who have lost touch with their inner newb and are too thick to become an advanced user) keep our repositories reasonably trimmed.

Make backups of important files. I always keep an easily accessible backup copy of my /etc/fstab, and my /boot/grub/menu.lst . And if those files change, I make a new backup.

If you get stumped on something, don’t bang your head too long to the point of smashing the computer with a sludge hammer (that thought has occured to me on occasion with my computers … :slight_smile: ). Instead after say 10 to 15 minutes (max) of surfing, if you don’t appear to be on the road to a quick solution, post in the appropriate subforum area asking for suggetions/advise.

I ask for advice quite often on our forum.

Hi oldcpu,

below is the output of zypper lr -d

So are the four repositories of Packman project considered there?
Frankly, I think the answer is no but the installation of Packman is according to the thread that I’ve mentioned earlier.

OK, repos # 3 and #8 are identical. There is no point having them twice, and it will simply slow down your software manager for no good reason. Remove #8.

Also, remove #1. There is no point to keep libdvdcss enabled, as the package on that repository is never updated, and if ever is updated there will be massive news announcements.

Reference Packman, you have them all. IF one specifies the top level repository then there are links that automatically ensure you have access to ALL applications on Packman.

oldcpu, thanks for the clarification.

by the way, understand from other post that you are familiar with ati cards.

appreciate if you can help with my post here, THANKS.

Sorry … I have only a Radeon HD3450 in a 2 year old laptop. My wife had an old ATI 9200 PRO ( ? ) but she gave that card (and the PC it was in) away to the maid.

I do not know anything about the newer AMD graphic cards.

This is what I’ve done on my new openSUSE install:
-> Yast
-> Language
-> Check the box for your language
-> Apply.

The only weird thing is that I need to reboot (usually not required on Linux) to get CJK input.
