openSUSE 11.4 in a small computer: hardware recommendations?

Hello,

I have plans to build a small, cheap and quiet computer for openSUSE 11.4. I haven’t used linux that much for a couple of years now and have some gaps in my knowledge of the latest developments.

At minimum, I need DVI output to a 1920x1200 screen and just basic networking functionality. As a secondary priority, I’d also like a HDMI or DVI connection to a second display - either a tv or a home theater receiver. If it’s going to be DVI, I’ll also need a S/PDIF output.

If I was building for Windows, I’d have several options. But since I’m going for linux, what would you recommend?

  • mATX or Mini-ITX for the motherboard?
  • An Intel Atom motherboard with integrated graphics, or a Core i3 with its integrated graphics?
  • or how about an AMD AM3?

How much W does the PSU need to have? The smaller computer cases have much variety in their PSU power.

I’d like a “it just works” solution, if possible. Keeping low price and small size in mind, if you have recommendations for specific hardware that is known to work with openSUSE 11.4, suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks for your input in advance.
