[openSUSE 11.4] Firefox won't launch anymore

I had some troubles for the fglrx driver for the ATI card, but it has been solved very quick.

I checked some applications and some of them won’t launch:

  • firefox (still)
  • vmware workstation (maybe because the kernel has changed)
  • acrobat reader (don’t really care but some pdf are more well handled by acrobat reader)
  • dirsyncpro
  • mysql-workbench (maybe because the kernel has changed)

The other applications are still running good (and they are opened more quickly)

I will open another thread to discuss about the fact there is no more /var/log/messages (all the other logs seems to be updated)

As far as I can see, there is no way to launch firefox again… (nore mysql-workbench, and all the other app I used untill saturday 22nd…)

No error messages, no logs, I removed/installed/updated so many times… the only thing that is nice is that all the stuff I stored (passwords, bookmarks) is still exploitable… but opera is awful, konqueror is worse, …

I checked all the dependencies and nothing is missing… there is nothing on the mozzila firefox web site concerning any workaround… I’m easy with the standard troubleshooting steps (system wide/user issues) never seen such thing in more than 15 years
of using Linux. I started in 1996.

I’m confused? you say they run once??? Then not again after quitting the app. If you reboot do they then run again?

If so maybe they are not quitting fully. They still in the ps -A list??? If so can you kill them and will then then run again?

Are you using any non regular repos? ie maybe factory? Is some other non standard repo? No mix of versions?

Your problem is very confusing and you will need to be clearer on your explanation for any to help

He posted his list previously. I directed him to use only the official
repos plus evergreen updates, so I guess they are correct now. But a
current listing out of “zypper lr --details” would be nice.

I have to hit the road, it will take me a bit to pick up the contact
again. I don’t have time ATM to think about this issue, sorry. Another day.

Thanx.

Let’s be more positive than at the last minutes of a frustrating end of sunday night ^^

http://susepaste.org/38207520

…will show the repositories used.

This is the list of the packages added on 22nd february (when I tried to install a ipod related package)

http://susepaste.org/84577715

All these packages have been removed since… I removed all the stuff I did the 22nd feb.
The delay from 1 am to 4am is the interval I tried to compile the sources with epic fail…
When I saw firefox wasn’t working anymore I tried these:

moving .mozilla to .mozilla_dead (all the password stored and bookmarks saved then)
remove the mozilla firefox package

I followed the best I could the advices given but I’m strongly surprised they didn’t fix the issue.

I removed all the stuff in all file system related to firefox (included clearing the /tmp folder) but .mozilla_dead

I saw that some applications were also dead (I don’t know if this is related to the 22nd incident or if this is because the kernel has changed)
I set up again the fglrx driver (without any problem)

There is no error messages, nore logs concerning the firefox/vmware/dirsyncpro/acrobatreader crashes

In console, root mode:
firefox -safe-mode won’t work → defunct
firefox → defunct

su hurukan (another user excluded from root group)
firefox -safe-mode → defunct
firefox → defunct

I concluded this was a system wide issue (the application won’t launch in every user space) that’s why I removed all the recent stuff related to the manipulations to install this f****** ipod application.

All the system is speed up since last update ^^ that’s nice.

I removed syslog-ng that suddenly stopped logging.
I changed /etc/sysconfig/syslog from SYSLOG_DAEMON=“syslog-ng” to “rsyslogd”

The log to /var/log/messages is now working but nothing significant to raise.

That’s all I wanted to communicate. And yes the issue is confusing ^^

There is some better results with these

http://susepaste.org/15752451

http://susepaste.org/5370431

…but there is no browser window displayed ^^

One note:
Your update repo still has a lower priority (110) than all the other repos (99). Change that (in YaST->Software Repositories f.e.) as it could cause problems, and update your system.

Does Firefox maybe open a window if you specify some other option, like -ProfileManager, -new-instance, -new-window or -preferences?

I tried -browser, -safe-mode (of course), -ProfileManager and there was no window displayed I also tried -display=0 and -display=:0

I’ll check with priority changes tomorrow…

Please, don’t take photos. It is text, so just paste it here inside a code tags block.

Do I see there that you have “MozillaFirefox-4”? Really, you have version 4 installed?
openSUSE 11.4 is old, but as it maintained, via evergreen, you should have version 23.

You probably have more inconsistencies than that…

Run this:

rpm -q -a --queryformat "%{INSTALLTIME}	%{INSTALLTIME:day} \
%{BUILDTIME:day} %-30{NAME}	%15{VERSION}-%-7{RELEASE}	%{arch} \
%25{VENDOR}%25{PACKAGER} == %{DISTRIBUTION} %{DISTTAG}
" \
| sort | cut --fields="2-" | tee rpmlist | less -S

and upload the resulting “rpmlist” file on suspaste.org.

Could not use susepaste (maybe too much data to paste).

This is the link to the file: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B3_EygVD1TIGc2ZZUkk2SU5yMUU/edit?usp=sharing

Thank you all for the help but if the issue is too complicated to fix, as I have not a deep knowledge in SuSE Linux, I could “simply” during the next holidays switch to 12.3 or 13.1.

But you see, currently firefox is not installed on your system.

Previously you had version 4, which is from about 2011. You should have
version 27.

But currently you don’t even have it installed!

This is what you have at the moment:

So get into yast package manager, search for firefox, and select install
it, which should be at least version 24 or more. Then search for all
those packages in the list above, and in the version tab verify that you
have the latest version from the “evergreen” repository. If not, click
on it to select that version.

Alternatively, you should have the version from the oss repo, but not
from the special mozilla repo. IMO.

Or another method could be to just remove all the above packages,
disable the mozilla repository, and then just select “mozilla-firefox”
for installation. Probably easier.

You can close the thread as “solved”.

I tried to update to 12.1 (failed) then clean installed to 12.2 (13.1 didn’t work because the radeon 3200hd wasn’t supported so X never worked).
Now it works with 12.2.

Now go to 12.3, should work there just fine, and you will like it better.
