I installed openSUSE 11.4 64bit successfully on my OCZ Vertex 2 extended SSD while AHCI was activated in BIOS. Now I have trouble with grub. It isn’t loading at all, no error messages just a forced reboot. It seems that grub (from the mbr) can’t read partitions right because when I switch in BIOS to IDE-mode it works (although I installed in AHCI-mode).
I tried around and installed grub2 for fun. I didn’t go very far but after installing grub2 into mbr it was loaded.
Why doesn’t openSUSE come with grub2?! I have to say that I had trouble with openSUSE 11.3 before but suddenly it worked in AHCI-mode - don’t know why.
This applies to a GIGABYTE H55M-USB3 board.

Hello JohannesN and sorry to hear of your problems. I also have an Intel SSD and installed openSUSE 11.4 “/” onto this drive. I have set it (and left it) to the AHCI mode and have no problems with this setting so far. I can say that, if you install in one mode (IDE or AHCI) and switch to the other later, nothing works, normally. Without regard to what you think may have happened, I might suggest, that what ever mode it works in now, is the mode that you used to install openSUSE. I can also say that I did have other odd issues with the Intel SSD until I upgraded the SSD firmware. Seems like this is a common occurrence on the subject with most SSD brands. So, I would actively seek out a firmware update. I also found out that some computer BIOS’ can use an update as well, unless it is very new. Do be careful when using BIOS updates, but at least check to see if such an update for your computer exists. By the way, I use and Love Gigabyte motherboards and highly recommend them to everyone.
As for grub2, I really hope they hold off a little longer before switching over. I am sure one day in the future it will happen, but thank God it has not happed so far. Anyone that modifies their OS menu listing a lot will know what I mean. Perhaps you will get your wish there on the very next release of openSUSE, but who knows really.
