Hello
I have been trying to use various live cds, including both kde and gnome, 64 bits on a computer that also has windows professional 64 bit installed. When I get to the instllation screen and try to invoke the live desktop choice, or even let it open on its own by waiting, it seems to start by loading the kernel but then trouble. I get the following messages:
[17.934711] no devices matches MBR identifier Oxd704f98b !
[17.935596] reboot Exception: error consoles at Alt-F3/F4
[17.936638] reboot Exception: reboot in 20 seconds
I really would like to try OpenSuse, but I cannot get beyond this problem. Please help if you can.
So is it possible the CD you made is bad? Have you considered switching to the Development 12.1 version, since it has a much newer kernel to see if it might work:
software.opensuse.org: Download openSUSE 12.1 Milestone 3
A bad disk or really new hardware not supported by kernel 2.6.37 are possible problems, but it is hard to know for sure. The development version is up to kernel 3.0 I think and worth a try if the stable release does not work.
Thank You,

while i think my friend in Austin is probably on a good track, and if so
the 12.1 you want to try is at <http://software.opensuse.org/developer/>
(and be SURE to do this with any disk you make:
http://tinyurl.com/2ebcf27 any error is here means the disk is not to be
used)
it sounds like maybe you are putting the different disks you have
tried into the disk caddy while while windows is running…and letting
Windows auto-run the disk? do not do that…
instead Boot from the DVD or CD. In case your computer does not
automatically boot from CD/DVD, open the BIOS setup to allow booting
from CD or DVD."
and, if of course you were booting from a disk and checking it…sorry
for the long shot guess that maybe you were not…

Thank you James and DD. I will try the devlopment version. Will I be able to get it in 64 bit? Also, just in response, I tried several different burned cds and dvds at various speeds, some very slowly. Also, I am booting from the cd/dvd not in windows. The screen I get to looks like the one in the tiny url above except that it has differnt background. I guess it’s been updated for the new version.

yes, the one i gave you is actually 11.3 while 11.4 has a vertically
broken green background…
i have no idea what the 12.1 version will have…
