we just received a new server in house for testing. we are in the process of upgrading our standard hardware profile (both internally and for our external customers)
Test #1 - i installed openSuSE 11.1 on the new box and then installed our custom application stack (mostly LAMP and jboss) on the server. the installation went fine and the box booted up to the desktop login manager with no issues.
Test #2 - i installed openSuSE 11.3 on the new box.
the box rebooted but never came up to runlevel 5. all i see is a command line prompt asking for a login.
i am not a hardware person - so i am not really sure how to debug this issue.
i did login in to the box as root and looked at the inittab file along with the /var/log/messages file
inittab has a runlevel of 5.
there’s alot of information in message - but nothing really stands out as “you got a problem!!”.
any help or direction would be greatly appreciated.
So I am not sure but are you trying to load one of the desktops? The main difference between openSUSE 11.1/11.2 & 11.3 was a video system change. The video utility sax2 was removed from openSUSE 11.3, the xorg.conf is not needed for video to work and the new video drivers some times does not handle newer video hardware very well requiring you to use the kernel load option nomodeset. It is included as an option in the failsafe kernel load for openSUSE. You can just enter the name nomodeset as an option and then press enter key and see if that helps. If you are not loading a desktop, then I am not sure I understand the problem. Further, I am not sure how many Linux servers as set to load a desktop either.

Video problem, X failed. See the hundreds messages about video problems in
11.3 and how to solve - it is a configuration issue >:-)

but, you call it a ‘server’ so why would you install X or expect it to
show you a GUI??
servers don’t do that, game machines do that…
if you want the free version of SUSE Linux Enterprise Server which is
what IBM’s Watson is using to cream the frail human competition at
Jeopardy, during install on the page where you can select KDE, Gnome
or etc hunt around until you find minimal text install and then flip
thorough the packages available and install the server bits you need…
THEN you have a server…otherwise you have a desktop doing double
duty by also offering print services, file services, database services
etc etc etc…
