I’m new here. I’m in trouble with openSUSE 11.3 that’s why I’m here.
When I install a brand new openSUSE 11.3 (with GNOM or KDE) to my brand new hardware I found a serious problem. After login and use of openSUSE the keyboard and mouse will freeze. I can not determine the cause of freeze. As I sudty the problem it is not related with any idle time or etc. SUSE randomly freezes the keyborad and mouse. Sometimes I can use my system for a half an hour other times freezes almost immediately. It is also true when I leave the system alone.
So advOPer, if you have really tried it all then there are not many options left. I can point you to a script that you can use to upgrade to kernel 2.6.35 for instance. If you decide to go that route, make sure you have installed the YaST / Software Management / View / Patterns for Base, Kernel & C/C++ Development, to insure that you can compile a new kernel.
If you don’t feel good about trying this, then don’t do it. Another choice might to try a different distribution of Linux. Here is a link to openSUSE 11.2 which does work better on some computers.
That problem was related to a specific kernel update.
The brand is irrelevant but I clicked on the link and saw that it is a GeForce 8400 GS. Somebody reported the exact same problem with the same GPU in the german subforum: ps2/usb mouse freeze unter Suse 11.3
I was having the same issue with the freezing. It was very annoying. When I downgraded my Kernel it fixed the issue. I have not had the issue with then new one that was released a week or so ago. I would give that a shot also. I have a 9600GT NV. I thought it was there drivers for a little while there. I am not sure if this helps but I hope so.
Thank You for advice. I choose the easiest way to solve the problem - as you mentioned too - downgrade to 11.2
I was a solid SUSE fan till nowadays. As I experienced the quality of SUSE becomes worst and worst.
I also fight a problem with xen which can not provide usb support my Windows XP HVM domain according to immature intergation of xen and suse
Hello advOPer and I am happy you did find a solution. There is nothing wrong in using openSUSE 11.2 as it is fully supported here and with updates. I have it loaded on my work laptop (as an external hard drive) and it works like a champ. I upgraded the kernel to the most recent and KDE up to 4.4.4, which works just fine. Hang in there as openSUSE 11.4, scheduled for release next year, promises to work out much better, I promise. In the meantime, we don’'t really lose a thing.
similar hardware and similar problems here. Installation of openSUSE 11.2 is still running. (Thinking of 11.4 and a new keyboard next month)
I started with a minimal X installation (xdm, twm, xfce) of openSUSE 11.4 RC1. Freezes occurred about every 5 minutes. Keyboard was lost once in console mode (init 3). Using nomodeset boot option and nvidia drivers freezes happen less often but still every 1-2 hours for xdm/xfce and about every 30 minutes using kdm/kde. Could not found any hints about the root cause in /var/log files. Luckily ssh works and system can be restarted the smart way.
Any ideas for how to debug this?
Best regards Pdug
