OpenSUSE 11.3 Kernel bug after memory fills to 100% with cache.

Did a fresh install of OpenSUSE 11.3 (64bit). Was getting errors after a while so deicded to investigate. They happen when memory fills to 100% with cache.

Don’t really know how to approach this error.

That is a kernel bug in the i915 code. Check for it on the kernel Bugzilla, and
report it if not found. You might also check the repos for a 2.6.35 kernel RPM.
The bug might have been already fixed, but not backported to 2.6.34.

Found some similar-looking bugs on bugzilla, so decided to try a new 2.6.35-rc5 kernel from the kernel:HEAD repository. System now crashes momentarily after loading the kernel, before loading syslog even, so no trace. Any suggestions on reverting to the old kernel? Got the openSUSE 11.3 Livecd so guess that would be a starting point?

Never mind, it doesn’t crash immediately in safe mode so will revert to the older kernel that way.

-Edit-

Doesn’t crash at all maybe I’ll keep it in safe mode for a while. Never read much about safe mode. Anything important missing from it?

Try the kernel params from the safe mode line one at a time on the main
kernel till you find the one that stops it crashing

On one machine here with 11.2 I had to enter acpi=ht IIRC to get that to
work, had up time of over 6 months till last night when I updated so it did
not create any noticeable problems.

But the new 11.3 kernel does not need that param so no probs for me :stuck_out_tongue:

Well except for having to put nomodeset because of oldish nvidia card.

In my posting. I recommended you get the RPM. I guess I should have been
explicit and told you to install, not update, using that RPM. If you had done
that, your GRUB menu would have had additional entries and you could have gotten
back to the old one at boot time.

You might also try booting with the “nomodeset” option.

Well, thanks anyway, your suggestions helped me a lot. It’s not everyday I install new kernels after all, so I’m glad I learned something.
