openSUSE-11.3- KDE4: Wired Internet problem: Connected to lan but not to internet

Hi! I Installed openSUSE (11.3, KDE) yesterday and I have been trying to get my internet connection to work. I have successfully used the connection in win7 so there shoudn’t be any problems with the card. I have successfully pinged one of my other computers in the network, but I can’t access the Internet.

I have tried disabling ip6, and using both ifup and the network manager but nothing has worked so far.

hi,

you can ping another computer on the network, but can you ping the default gateway?
To find it :

#route -n

I actually didn’t find any more entries than lan and loopback when running route -n so I manually added a default gateway (#route add default gw mygateway) and it seamed to fix it. Shouldn’t the default gateway be set automatically set when using dhcp?

hm… now I noticed that when plugged out and in the network cable, the problem came back and I had to repeat the procedure to get online again, so how do I fix it more permanently?

yes it should, certainly. Is your router doing dhcp as well?
But you fixed it, not many people would have thought about adding the default gateway manualy.

The router has worked flawlessly with dhcp with other comuters so I really don’t know why it doesnt with this one… I also tried this computer on a different network and that worked… well I hope to make the wireless function soon and then I should not need this connection anyway…

  1. I haven’t tried this on SuSE, but on most OS if you configure a route manually, it will over-ride anything given by DHCP automatically.
  2. Inspect your routing table which should include your Default Gateway, in linux with root permissions, in a terminal type

  1. AFAIK if you add a route from the command line, it’s only temporary unless you include the parameter to make it persistent (It’s that way in Windows which should be the same in Linux).

Try setting the Gateway in YaST. This should persist.

YaST–>Network Devices–>Network Settings–>Routing

sorry 4 my poor english…
I have the same problem whit a fresh install openSUSE 11.3.
In my system i have 3 network card: eth0, eth1 and wlan0.
eth0 and eth1 work well (so, there network is local), but whit wlan0 i can ping only the local network (also local pc) but not internet.
For this card i use a static IP address and i also try un-check the option “Change Default Route via DHCP” on YaST->Network…

The route -n output is this:

When you chose a static IP, there are a number of things you also need to do,
which is why we recommend using DHCP for newbies. In addition, the distribution
media have some bugs. They are fixed in the updates, but you need networking to
get the updates. Please run the following command:


sudo /sbin/route add default gw 192.168.1.1

If your router is not 192.168.1.1, then make the appropriate change.

You also need to make sure that /etc/resolv.conf contains a valid “nameserver”
line. If you have any doubts, add “nameserver 8.8.8.8” to that file.

Once you have these two changes, you should be able to access the Internet and
get those updates.

but don’t work (0.1 is the ip address of may gateway)… and after i have delete this.
a question: what is the different to launch the command route and /sbin/route ?? it isn’t the same ???

I have the same problem: not access to Internet by browser Firefox version 3.6. 6 for openSuSe 11.3 but I have access to my internet service provider.
Note: I have full access to Internet with browser Opera 11.00 build 1156.
Question: What can I do with settings for Firefox 3.6.6 that resolve this problem?
How to make browser Opera 11.00 default system browser?

My PC is notebook Sony VAIO VGN-AR770U
OS is openSuSe 11.3 x86_64.
