Hi
I have OpenSuSE on eeepc 901. “/” is mount on 4 GB disk. So as you can guess i don’t have enough space. With empty /tmp and /var/tmp
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/sda1 3.7G 3.4G 192M 95% /
devtmpfs 500M 200K 499M 1% /dev
tmpfs 500M 4.0K 500M 1% /dev/shm
/dev/sdb1 15G 14G 367M 98% /home
I have deleted everything from start menu i know i don’t use (virtual keyboard, kmail and etc.). I have installed everything i need too. My /home is mount on other partition. I use the machine for web browsing, music, movies,openoffice.org. Little C++ programing. Now it’s time for the stupid question - can you tell me things/programs to delete, techniques in order to free some space. I was wondering to mount /tmp and /var/tmp in Ram memory, but i have only 1gb and no swap so i don’t know is this is good idea.
please do not take this as anything other than as helpful as i can be:
your question and problem is similar to that person who hundreds of
years ago asked:
I have 30 pounds of apples and one sack which will hold 20 pounds.
What should I do?
so, beginning there let me recommend:
-
get another sack (add drive space)
-
throw out the bad apples (use YaST to remove unused
applications…only you can decide what applications you don’t
need…i didn’t say start deleting system files, services, etc that
you are not certain you do not need–backup BEFORE you delete
anything…move some static stuff (music, movies, pictures, etc)
out of /home and onto (say) a CD, DVD, USB key or drive)
-
juggle some of the apples (putting tmp in RAM is fine but you can’t
possible save more than one apple seed’s space since you have the
MINIMUM RAM recommended for 11.3 already)
in short, it is pretty close to impossible to put 30 pounds of apples
into a 20 pound sack, without winding up with a soggy sack of
applesauce by trying…

I am considering the option - shrink /dev/sdb1 which is mount as /home and create /dev/sdb2 which i can mount as some directory from /
