openSUSE 11.3 isues after automatic kernel update to 2.6.34.7-0.5.1-desktop

hello guys,
my friend updated kernel today and it “stopped working” and I was asked to fix it
he is new to linux, and I don’t have physical access to that notebook
from what I know main problems are:

  1. no network devices exist (except for loopback)
  2. sound card driver is missing (nVidia MCP79)
  3. in grub menu after choosing new kernel uname -r sais the old one’s version

wifi card is atheros, but I don’t know specific model

I could really use some aid here,
thanks

i suspect that his menu.lst in /boot/grub didn’t get updated properly.

phani.

yeah, I got that one, and I tried to fix it manually, but with same result
anyway, we’ve started restore from DVD, maybe that will fix it

thx, anyway

ok fixed
thanks

PLEASE tell us how you fixed it! There is something wrong with the update. This is like the 3rd time an update has caused me grief! I did an update today. I paid little attention to what was updated. (Won’t be doing that again) Upon reboot, borked system. No eth0, or sound among other things. Log shows /lib/modules/2.6.34.7-0.3 desktop directory missing. So little is working. What was supposed to happen with this update ,and how to fix it? Assuming a new kernel was installed, I ASSUME it is as simple as modifying the grub menu to point to the new one. Not sure what was updated. Anyone point me in the right direction? I’m sitting at the root password to update my laptop,. but don’t dare, or I might be down on my only alternate system!

Followup: I see there IS a newer kernel, so assume that is what went wrong. Using Yast2 to update the boot loader is not working though. What ever is borked, has caused this to not work either. So now I have to research how to modify the menu.lst and update. I forget how, but hopefully this will fix the problem. They really need to spend an extra nanosecond before releasing these patches to make sure they aren’t messing up thousands of systems. That just drives users away. At least from Opensuse. It damages the reputation. Heck, I can get these kinds of problems with XP!
