I installed OpenSUSE 11.3 a few weeks ago. It freezes 10 - 15 seconds after startup. I got a brief, but incomplete reply to what I thought was another related problem on the forum (OpenSUSE 11.3 / Mozilla Firefox freezes upon moving the mouse), but it turns out that the problem is neither the mouse nor Firefox. It freezes without doing anything special.
I request that you tell us a lot more about your computer Hardware & Software:
CPU Type & speed, Memory Type & Amount, Motherboard/PC Chipset/Brand/Model
Video Chipset/Brand/Model, Hard Drive Setup for Partitions & OS Versions
openSUSE 11.3 32 or 64 bit? KDE Desktop version, Kernel Version
Anything else that might be helpful in diagnosing your problem. When I have seen such an issue it was directly related to the video setup and so this may take a closer look.
Thank You,
I think this is the requiered information:

If not, where do I find any missing information?
So JeffreyBacon I see that this is the second thread on this same subject that you have started. Did you try the suggestions made by rajko_m?
So As mentioned on a Facebook, and having experience with some old bugs, updating the computer should be first thing to do.
It is often known problem that is solved with updates, although in this case it might be different
There is bug report in Access Denied
It is a bit different chipset, yours is Intel Corporation 82945G/GZ and reported is Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS. It seems that every current distro has that problem.
Next bug report found is also new https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=29872 and you can try advice in comment https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=29872#c6 . First add i915.modeset=1 to boot screen to check if that cures the problem. If it does then you can edit /boot/grub/menu.lst and add that option in the line with other kernel options. The other option is to find /etc/modprobe.d/i915-kms.conf and add line options i915 modeset=1 to that file.
Specifically the kernel load i915.modeset=1, which you set in your Grub OS selection menu.lst file located in the /boot/grub folder? You can also issue this command just before you select openSUSE to load by just typing it in and pressing enter. I would also try the option nomodeset at the same location. There are other things one could try, but it may be a bug with your hardware when used on Linux, but it is hard to know for sure. Also, if you are desperate, you might consider updating your kernel, as a last resort and not something we recommended to new users, but still worth a look.

Thank You,
That did it! I changed to another CPU, with a newer chipset, and all’s well. Thanks so much for your reply!
JeffreyBacon says: That did it! I changed to another CPU, with a newer chipset, and all’s well. Thanks so much for your reply!
JeffreyBacon I love it when a plan comes together with a solution. Could you be more specific as to what you did that made everything work properly? Remember others with the same issue might read this thread and wonder what part of it was the fix. Any information would be helpful.
Thank You,
I just switched to a newer CPU:

I couldn’t fix the problem on the other CPU with my limited knowledge of Linux and the information available to me.
Thanks again
So when you say you changed your CPU (Central Processing Unit) did you really mean GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) as in a different or add-in Video card? Just trying to understand what was changed here. It is not all that normal, but possible I guess, to change your CPU, short of a whole different PC. But changing or installing a new video card is very common.
Thank You,
That looks like a different mother board.
gogalthorp, once again you hit the nail on the head as they say. I am going to blame my lack of observation on the pain pills my doctor has subscribed as its the only excuse I can come up with quickly.
Thank You,
I changed to another PC, until I can update the old one.
I suspect that the original problem on the original machine is due to a video problem.
I have the exact same problem. I’ve kept patching hoping that some fix would come, but I’m starting to give up.

You have a ATI video card/chip I suspect the solution may be different for you. You should really start a new thread. You might want to install the proprietary driver.
I have the same problem plus some more,it freezes frequently, some times when I choose one of my external hard disks or a file I saved on my desktop from my desktop all icons disappear,if i go to the desktop folder are there,I’m not sure if you understand what I’m saying.

warlordfff, you seem to have a nVidia video card and so you should look at this document before proceeding on…
SDB:Configuring graphics cards - openSUSE
Also look at the link below as suggested by gogalthorp in a previous post.
openSUSE Graphic Card Practical Theory Guide for Users
Then, take a look at the procedure I use to install the nVidia driver as I install openSUSE 11.3:
- During the install, when you have the option to change your booting setup, I add nomodeset to the kernel load command for the normal load/start of openSUSE. This kernel startup option is already present for the Failsafe selection for openSUSE.
- During the first start of openSUSE, I download the latest nVidia Video driver to the downloads folder.
- I change/save the System/Kernel option NO_KMS_IN_INITRD from “No” to “Yes” in the /etc/sysconfig Editor in Yast.
- I do an update of openSUSE on the first run of openSUSE and then a restart/reboot.
- In grub OS selection I add the command line option “3” to the openSUSE start line so that I just go to the run level three terminal prompt.
- I login in as root and change to the /home/user/Downloads folder.
- I run/install the NVIDIA video driver using “sh ./NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-256.53.run” and answer all questions as appropriate for my system.
- Type in reboot at terminal prompt to restart the system with new video driver.
Following these procedure to install the proprietary nVidia video driver can often provide a much more stable computer. Other issues can involve the kernel version you have installed. In the next post is information on how to load multiple kernel versions, finding the one that works best for you.
Keeping the current kernel when doing a kernel update through yast
Thank You,
