Using (as root): /sbin/shutdown -h now
or
init 0 (as root)
or
Shutting down from the menu (gnome) only results in a reboot.
The only way to shut down the laptop is to power it down while on POST. All three worked fine with 11.2 64bit.

This is a kernel bug. Test version 2.6.34.2 kernel, how well with this error fixed.
I have a Dell Precison M4500, which had the same problem, and now works perfect.

Thanks for the reply. I think I’ll wait for the opensuse 11.3 distribution to update it’s kernel.
In the meantime, the following workaround ‘fixes’ the problem: disconnect power, and while on battery power, do the shutdown
That is a great work around, nice and simple and will do the trick until the Kernel update occurs.
Thanks!
