Opensuse 11.2 Repository Upgrade Problem/Network Problem

Good Day!

Well i downloaded the Opensuse 11.2 KDE last 2 days and i haven’t enjoyed it yet, first i installed it and update the repository from yast before i explore it, so after, i decided to play some avi’s and play online streaming and installed some reqiurements for the avi’s and streaming, so all things went fine, and then next morning i open my computer to search on the internet and automatic update notify me to install some repository that i think i required so i accept it, but suddenly an error appeared saying about “abstractcommand.cc:195…” so, i decided to reinstall the Opensuse, so update notify me again and told to do it manually, so i went to yast again and the worst error again about my network and i try to open firefox if i have an internet (im connected on the network) but when i try to open some sites failed to connect but i only connects to google and try to search, the worst i can’t connect to opensuse’s website…

hope someone could help me with the matter so i can go back to opensuse again (now im using ubuntu)…

Thanks!..

Arion

Welcome,

When you have a fresh install, and you try to pull up firefox, the firefox homepage or google page will show up automatically. Typically you are not automatically hooked up to the internet automatically on a fresh install. Go to the bottom right corner and right-click on the network icon. If you have wireless it will show and you click on that to either enter you WAP or WEP key. If you are wired, than you just highlight over it, and click to enable.

Also before updating you repo’s, it is advised you go into your repo manager and only allow the repo’s “update” " oss" and “non-oss” on your list. the other ones are not necessary for new users. This is because by having too many repo’s, and not having adequate knowledge, you can really cause a world of pain for yourself by causing dependency issues. You can also enable the “Packman” repo if you into media, but you really shouldn’t have more than those four until you know what your doing ( not that I do, but i stick to the four  Just completely get rid of the other repo’s on your list that I have not mentioned, than go for the updates .

Hope this helps

-cheers

i reinstall my opensuse 11.2 kde this morning and follow the steps you told me, so i started to connect on the internet via wireless connecting to router, so after it connects my connection said “active” so the update applet start automatically and a notify window pops and after i click on a window saying to me an error and there’s a button about “manual update” via yast, so i go to yast to try to update manually, so when im updating an error saying about the repos and “check the server if it is accessible”. and then i tried to open firefox if i have a problem with the network, so i opened my firefox and the welcome tab for firefox and the home site opensuse failed to load, but when i try to connect to google and facebook i smoothly search with google and signed in on facebook, but the update applet, online update in yast, package manager, everything about upgrades failed to connect to the server (as it says when i try to connect it to the internet to download repos “non”, “oss” “updates”).

Hi arion778. If its at all possible, try connecting your computer with a wired ethernet connection. It will make things simpler for you. You can start a new thread, if you think your wireless is still not working properly.

thanks dean! i’ll try it when i got home…

question: is it possible that my hardware (network adapter) conflicts with opensuse 11.2 kde?..

my network adapter: atheros 5005gs but in opensuse register as atheros 5001+network adapter…

No, it looks like it is working, but not yet associated. Start another thread if you need help with that. Make sure you read the wireless stickies first:

Thanks a lot dean!

the admin already replied about the problem and told me to try “ipv6.disable=1”, i’ll try it when i got home…

Successful! i can connect smoothly on firefox…

Now, here’s my main problem about “update” “oss” “non-oss”…

Here’s my log:

I have the exact same issue here. I suspect that it may be an openSuSE issue because I see my machine sending connect requests to the openSuSE server (TCP SYNs) and the openSUSE server rejecting them (TCP RST).

If you don’t have an urgent need to update, give it a day or so. Typically OpenSUSE is pretty quick to fix these things. However, if you have the time, you could go subscribe to one of their mailing lists and report it there. Those guys respond pretty quickly.

Mailist quick primer: Mailinglists - openSUSE

Quick update: Online Update is working now. So if you are still stuck, then something else may be impeding your access to the online update functionality.

@chilywily
arion778 started another thread for this here. He has now installed a different KDE-based distro.

Thanks deano_ferrari!
