opensuse 11.2 repair ext3 filesystem within encrypted lvm2

hi everybody,

i have two ext3 partitions within an encrypted lvm2 volume.
when i start up my system it says that there are 0.3% non contiguous blocks.

This is my steup:

/dev/sda1/
/boot

/dev/sdb2
Volumegroup System
/ 42 GB ext3 Logical Volume root
/home 108 GB ext3 Locigal Volume home
swap 2 GB swap Logical Volume swap

When i want to repair with repair system from dvd it tells me that the repair and check operation for encrypted LVM devices is not supported. so how can i fix my filesystem? Please give me a step by step instruction.

Is that realy something that should be ‘repaired’? IMHO this is nothing to be worried about.

yeah you are right. it just means that the ext3 filesystem is a bit fragmented. this is what they are sying in irc. i havent tried it yet but the program shake should be able to defrag the filesystem in userspace. for opensuse 11.2 there is a package in buildservice.

however in the case of bigger issues shutdown -rF now should do what i want.

just in case someone needs help for the same problem

Yes, your fragmentation is almost nil. No need to do anything, wasted effort and time (and may be a smalle change for problems). I think almost nobody here did ever defragment an ext2/3/4 (or a Reiser).

Enjoy your system!

From what I read, on-line defragmentation for ext4 is in the pipeline. That
said, these file systems never get badly defragmented the way that the ones from
Redmond do. Proper design works wonders. I have been running Linux since 1997
and I have never defragmented file systems on other than Windows.
