Bluetooth worked in the begining but after updating to KDE 4.2 I ran into some issues. After I brought KDE to 4.3.3 (Release 1)then I updated the Bluetooth packages and all is well again now. I downloaded 11.2 last night and I’m now waiting on my backup so I can upgrade. Man oh man do I have a lot of data!
I too cannot vote in this poll as i am new to Suse and new to KDE.
I have been using Ubuntu for many years (and Debian before that).
Although impressed with KDE and the way that the desktop looks (way more up to date than Ubuntu’s most recent effort).
However, Suse has failed me.
Why, well some basic stuff still needs attention and does every time i install Linux (machines vary, these problems are recurring).
- Desktop resolution of 1024x768
- Laptops have had wide screens for long enough now. 1280x800 should be standard…
-
Nvidia drivers - i know they are proprietary but i still cannot find whether i can get them from the Yast repos (initial searches say not with current repos).
-
Yast and Nvidia info is not easy to find on this site. Searches of the documentation and of the forums yeild very little.
-
and this is a big one! ONLY 2 OF MY 4GB OF RAM IS RECOGNISED SO WHY THE NEW KERNEL? Seriously, what is the point of this new kernel when it does not do the headline task of recognising RAM.
Sound is working ok, as is wifi (which didnt on one of the test releases i tried).
Overall, although impressed, i am saddened by my experience with Suse, like with Ubuntu things like Cloud support get higher priority than basic functionality.
Linux as a whole needs to focus. Its all very well being hot on Servers, but unless the desktop is dealt with then things will always need fiddling on install, major things screen resolution and RAM.
Yep, 11.2 of in the bin now… although it found my other systems during install, it cannot now boot into any of them - Error 15 :File not found.
Grub, also been around ages… basic stuff failing and yet it is on version 11…
My experience with 11.2 is something like i had with redhat 6… big fat fail.
You stated you were NEW to openSUSE. Did you look at the top level of our forum and then go to the NEW USERS HOW-TO/FAQ area?
… and then LOOK at the stickies:
- NEW Users - openSuse Pre-install (general) – PLEASE READ - openSUSE Forums
- NEW Users - Suse-11.2 Pre-installation – PLEASE READ - openSUSE Forums
Well that WOULD really annoy me too. I recommend you start a new thread asking for help on that. This is the “announcements” area. This is NOT the help area of our forum.
I normally help on sound, but the new release is so good in that area it has left me out of volunteer work.
Given this is your 1st post. Given you have not yet asked for help … would you not say that assessment is a tad premature?
Welcome to openSUSE and PLEASE post for help in the appropriate forum area.
Good luck!
11.2 released with all the problems
No update repos
Kernel is sh***** no net work dhcp runs for ever to get a connection
A very old version kde 3.4.1
Xfi sound card is not working in 11.2
I am on 4.3.3 version 2
Far better kernel than the rushed 2.6.3x kernels full of bugs compiled my own kernel. lean and quick
Which fool altered the way xorg was done in 11.1
a lot of monitors have a max resolution which only can be reached with “PreferredMode” “1920x1080” so use a normal xorg.conf
And no one asked for a new kernel etx4 no info for ssd Hd users so they have to force install to use etx3.
And then you think i have a brand new opensuse.
Please make my day and tell me what is new on this release
I have openoffice upgraded olso Xorg
Hplip the latest release compiles
Digikam and showfoto the latest releases compiled
I use Cromium browser and opera so who is waiting for
firefox integration in the desk top for crying out loud.
And when i have to print a website or so use konqueror
So I skip 11.2 and wait for 11.3 in the hope that the hobby-mentality is gone and we get a normal release
User susegebr. This is the announcements sections. Not the soap box. Do you have a problem reading the guidelines as to what sort of posts go in what area?
Finally !! I’ve been waiting and waiting and waiting for someone to post asking for help on their sound card. That is my main volunteer activity. Not one person so far. So please post asking for help here in either the multimedia or hardware area. Thankyou !!
So ? … so use a normal xorg.conf. Nothing is stopping you from doing that. It will still work.
No one? And just where were you when the decision was made based on many people asking?
Here is a preliminary post: openSUSE Forums - View Single Post - yaUs - yet another Ubuntu switcher
If you wish to pursue this further, please post on soapbox for your rant.
If you wish help on your sound, please post on either hardware (if its your sound card’s configuration) or multimedia (if its your codecs) subforums area.
I already changed to 11.2 and I’m in love with it!rotfl!

Thanks for the feedback.
However, i am not looking for help, i am assessing the release candidate :), which in my opinion is not ready.
I did actually look at those links you posted before installing. The Nvidia one is not up to date and only gives a repo for Yast.
This led me to ask myself, which one do i need, which kernel have i got and which headers do i need.
The others are about basic linux preps and also only relate to earlier versions of openSuse.
This is not an attack on Suse, i have found the recent crop of new releases to be a retrograde step where i have to go and fix stuff i was fixing with linux installs 5 years ago.
Right now i am sorting out my grub set up as that is keeping me in Suse by preventing me from booting my other linux install. It is only out of hard earned experience that i installed this in its own totally separate partitions sharing only the swap drive.
As for sound, i am actually pretty pleased with sound so far as that is my usual headache with new installs of linux.
I have installed linux many many times and i have done the whole fix up of everything from xserver to sound and wifi, but these days i just want it to work, yet i do not want to go to windows or mac for that. Unreasonable? Maybe a little but I cant be the only one.
Thanks.
hmmm… I don’t agree with that completely. Yes it does not mention 11.2, but the same approach applies. In my case I always install “the hardway” (which is not hard) and less than 30 minutes ago I installed the proprietary nvidia driver for my nvidia GeForce FX5200 on 11.2. It works wonderful.
I’m sort of glad to read that, … but I’m feeling a bit “not needed” as my main support area, which is to help users with very basic sound problems, no longer needs me.
Good luck with your grub efforts. In the past 11 years, of the 3 times I had to do a Linux re-install, 2 were because of grub.
I upgraded 11.1 to 11.2 and up until now I figured upgrades were doomed to fail (many issues). But this time all went quite wel.
This how it went in short:
1 Upgrade with the DVD image
2 After the upgrade, the system failed to reboot because it couldn’t found the root partition. Luckily I had the DVD, so I reinstalled GRUB. Then I had my first glance at 11.2rotfl!
3 Since I wanted my eye-candy back, I installed nvidia (I used the short-cut “My Computer” on the desktop to determine the Geforce number: 5) by adding the Nvidia 11.1 repository and changing 11.1 to 11.2. I then selected the appropriate kernel module for Geforce legacy 5 and had my eyecandy back.
4 My sound was a bit buggy, but I went to the process mentioned in Check your multimedia problem in ten steps - openSUSE Forums
And installed gstreamer and xine packages from Packman.
Offcourse upgrading a system is not ment for total newbies with linux. But for my (a humble desktop-user) it’s doable and a lot of fun, I might add…
A Zillion thanks to the openSUSE community for all this beautiful stuff that I am gazing at right now.
Good luck to you all with 11.2
11 hrs to download 11.2 iso. New install went very well, BUT, can’t save the screen resolution ie monitor 1 1680 x 1050 monitor 2 1024 x 768. What has happened to Sax or even xorg.conf. It means I have to reset the screen resolution every time I log out, restart, or switch off/on. A great looking distro ruined . Looks like its back to win7 and 11.1 for me
I think this is possibly easily solvable. Post your problem on a support thread (NOT on announcements) and someone for sure will pitch in and probably easily solve this.
It is an excellent idea to put the announcement below on the home page, but
-
The link to Software.openSUSE.org is broken! It says ‘Page not found’ which will surely frighten off the new users. This link works for me: Software.openSUSE.org
-
The announcement isn’t visible when one is logged in to the forum. This makes some sense, but it means we won’t see the problems, it was just lucky I noticed it.

Thanks. I reported that to one of the admins, but it may be monday or tuesday before its fixed.
One more thing: on the openSUSE home page, if you look under the screenshots section, you’ll see openSUSE 11.1 screenshots. Shouldn’t they now be changed to 11.2 ones? So that they’ll attract more new users.
i downloaded and installed the new version. it’s quite faster than 11.1 but repositories isn’t right now i think. because i can’t install vga driver beacuse of i was install the kernel pae version. and opensuse 11.2 installs php version 5.3 rc4. it’s buggy i think because on my projects mysql_fetch line didn’t work. i love you guys… forever openSuSE and please organise these repositories as soon as possible…
I installed nvidia-driver with a pae-kernelmodule, from the 11.2 nvidia repo. If you can’t, then you should perhaps consider starting a new thread in Hardware?
The same applies, I think, to your remark about PHP5, although you should be possible to downgrade by using the appropiate repo (Index of /distribution/11.2/repo/oss). But since this is not assessing a new distribution anymore, I will stop right here…
Good luck!
Can’t vote either - wierd. Anyhoo, got 11.2 on the desktop and laptop (via usb drive install - real easy)
Now I’m an ex-ubuntu user, looking to use KDE and Yum for a while… Great OS, little tricky in parts, but a really good OS.
Many thanks to all those who participated in creating this shiny new 11.2 release. Works for me almost flawlessly… despite the last one 11.1. You people at SUSE company rockz! And of course really nice DVD labels & covers made by VintagePC. THX
yea i downgraded the php version. and i have an ati vga card.i’ve downloaded at ati but driver is for kernel default i think, it’s says wrong version. anyway i’m waiting for updates there is nothing to do.
