I’m still working with OpenSUSE 11.2, and gradually getting familiar with it. But here is a new one. My display settings are currently 800x600, which reads fine on a 22" wide monitor, but there are times when I have to go higher on resolution to do things like see a whole window (such as the one displayed by the software update manager). But when I try to increase the resolution to any other setting and it takes effect, the mouse pointer just disappears. I mean I can move the mouse around, and see when it crosses an icon because of the color shift that takes place, and if on a button I can activate it with the left button, but I cannot see the mouse pointer at all. If I wait out the timeout before the resolution reverts to the 800x600, the mouse will sometimes reappear at the lower setting, only sometmes it doesn’t.
I can’t find any adjustment for the mouse at all, and when I search these forums, I find no mention of any post that deals with the mouse at all. Maybe someone else has had the same problem, or has some idea of how to get the mouse to show at any and all resolutions, large enough to be seen, but not so large as to get in the way.
I’m running an HP with Nvidiaz graphics integraxted, buxt I was never given a choice of driver for it, OpenSUSEmade make its own pick during the install.
The only clues i found suggested possibly the settings in the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file, and I looked at these. but they made no sense to me, so I moved beond that.
I kept checking back here with no posts to guide my efforts further, but I would occasionally retry changing the resolutions on myh own. Once in a great while the mouse would appear at some higher resolution, but it the screen contents were justtoo small, I would have to let it revert to the800x600 setting. If I lost the mouse pointer at that setting, I would just tru tp get tp the Shutdown settings and do a reboot. I also tried to just log out as user and bsvk in, but that would not bring the mouse pointer back.
But I did chance on a way to get around it. What I found was that if I drifted the mouse over the bottom toolbar and picked a different Window, the mouse pointer would likely appear again on a new page. Then if I got back to the original page, I would still have the mouse pointer displayed. But I had to be quick, or the timeout for the new resolution would expire, I finally got back fast enough to lock in, and the mouse is still where I can see it, but it is quite small. I would like it bigger, of course.
I have had the same exact same issue, and the solution was to use Sax2.
Too bad it will be gone soon, I will be stuck at 800x600 in openSUSE 11.3 when it comes out so i probably wont use that release.
Hers hoping auto config gets more features between here and the time 11.3 comes out.

this is openSUSE, it will never automatically install the non-open,
proprietary driver made by nVidia…instead it will always install
the very open GNU driver named nv…
unfortunately, i’m not smart enough to know exactly how to install the
better working, free but proprietary driver, but you can try: http://en.opensuse.org/Nvidia
as i recall, Intel made a big show (in the press) of working with
Linux driver hackers, but it didn’t produce any top notch
drivers–but, i’m not sure if that was for the 945 or some other…
as far as i remember the ‘goodness’ of driver support occur in this order:
nVidia
ATI
Intel
others…
if you don’t like the support you get, be sure and send a nice note
to the Intel folks urging them to support YOU, since you bought their
product this time…
and, remember that you can (i guess) stuff a old (and cheap) nVidia
card in and THEN do 3D…
