OpenSuSE 11.2 Boxed Distro for North America?

For various reasons, including a desire to support OpenSuSE, I prefer to buy the boxed distro. Why is there still no boxed 11.2 distro for North America? The en.opensuse.org link has said “Stay Tuned” for a long time now.

What gives? Needless to say this continuing situation does not create user confidence in OpenSuSE. Would anyone care to offer a credible explanation?

Is OpenSuSE dying? Is this lack of a boxed 11.2 distro (further) evidence of collusion between Novell and MS? Is there any reason to expect a boxed distro for 11.3? Is it time to begin thinking about migrating to another distro?

That’s an awful lot of doom and gloom, just for lack of a cardboard box and a DVD. Why try to instill fear in others? I am just not sure why you had to go that far, when a simple, “How long till we get the boxed copy on this side of the pond?” would do.

at least learn how to spell it…

instead of the FUD <http://tinyurl.com/2478pa> you spread here, why
not send an email to the folks who actually have the contract to world
wide disto the retail box and are (as far as i know) the only ones on
earth that can tell you when it will be distributed, if ever…you can
learn who they are in this new release:

http://news.opensuse.org/2009/12/10/opensuse-11-2-and-its-retail-box/

in other words, it appears the hold up is not the fault of Novell or
“the openSUSE Community” except in signing a contract with a company
who seems to be unable to deliver in a timely fashion…

> Is OpenSuSE dying?

i’ve not heard of OpenSuSE…do you mean openSUSE?

if so, a short trip to any of several sites will show openSUSE within
the top five of all Linux distros…

‘collusion’??

> Is there any reason to expect a boxed distro for 11.3?

ask Novell, that is their ‘thing’…

absolutely! though not for the “reasons” you wonder about…

I have to agree with Wilson - “no box = dying distro” is a pretty big (and unsubstantiated) conclusion to jump to. Especially since the majority of other Linux distros don’t even offer an official retail media, and the EU retail version has been around for awhile.

I imagine there are probably issues with the distributor. Just relax, it’ll get here eventually :). If you absolutely need some sort of “official” media, osdisc.com and other similar services release semi-official media. You could also just use your self-downloaded/burned disc, and print out the PDF version of the guide from Novell.

Thanks all for the attempts at responses. Notwithstanding the objections about my spelling and allegedly instilling fear, no one supplied a credible and reassuring explanation for the unprecedented lack of a boxed version of an OpenSuSE distro. Any FUD originates with the parties responsible for lack of a timely boxed distro, and the lame “Stay Tuned” message, which has been allowed to languish for weeks if not months.

Have you tried contacting the responsible parties? You know, the ones that are poised to provide a “reassuring explanation?” While posting a message in a community forum will get you some attention, you really should contact the authority for such matters… and then do your part to help the community by sharing their response.

The page at this moment shows, that Jonathan_R is working on it. It shows an email address to contact in case of questions. Don’t know if Jonathan put it there just now.

AFAIK the forums are the place the to put the question, if you don’t know the proper place. At least one of all of us should be able to find an answer to the question.

I found the German online shop that sells the box set by following the link, but I didn’t want to register to find out if they will ship to other countries and how much. Maybe someone who has bought from them can post here?

or if the OP really wants to know, he can do that himself…
or contact the folks who are in control…
i told him how to find them three days ago, and still s/he comes
back here instead of going to where actual satisfaction might be found…
