openSUSE 11.2 and CD drive problems with audio CD

I recently installed openSUSE 11.2.

The computer has a CD drive. When I put a blank CD in it, it recognizes and mounts the blank CD just fine. When I put an audio CD in it, the computer does nothing.

Previously this computer had Ubuntu 9.10 on it, the computer didn’t act that way with Ubuntu.

Is there something wrong? I assume it is not supposed to behave like this in openSUSE. If this is a problem, how do I go about fixing it?

Thanks.

You will need to follow this first
Multi-media and Restricted Format Installation Guide - openSUSE Forums

Open CD in music player, I’m kde and use amarok.

Thanks.

I had gone through all the stuff outlined in the web site you suggest. When I try to play a midi file using Totem, I get this message:

The playback of this movie requires a audio/midi decoder plugin which is not installed.

Other thoughts? I’m lost at this point.

Don’t use Totem!

Sorry, ignore the post I just put out there, I got mixed up and put the wrong reply in the wrong thread.

HOWEVER - since the suggestion in this thread is the same as the other thread, my reply is the same - I had already done all the stuff in the web site suggested, but am having the issue with the audio CD not being recognized nor mounted, nor can I do anything with it.

Further suggestions?

@caf4926 <pokes tongue out!/>

@dln9 Have you installed the totem-plugins?

Honestly Malcolm. Totem, from all I have seen is not up to much. At least it’s darn fussy.
But over to you as the gnome guru, as the OP may need for some strange reason to use Totem :stuck_out_tongue:

Nope, I don’t have to use Totem.

I don’t know what else to use. As I wrote, I have an existing Ubuntu setup, and in that Totem just played the midi file, so I figured that must be the preferred application to use. I’m sure I’m mainly a victim of my inexperience.

If I should be considering something else, please tell me. Right now I can’t get it to play at all.

However, I would like to understand why Totem will play a file in Ubuntu, and not in openSUSE.

Yes, I installed the totem plugins.

Please do this in a terminal and post result

zypper lr -d

Thanks.

Become su in a terminal and do the following:

zypper mr -d 4
zypper ref
zypper dup -r Packman Repository

Now try

At the zypper dup -r “Packman Repository” command, this is what I get:

main2@linux-oynt:~$

su terminal

zypper mr -d 1
zypper dup -r Packman Repository

Report back if you get the same error,

I got the exact same eleven error messages.

OK
Please try this

zypper dup

It wants me to uninstall a few packages, upgrade a bunch, and reinstall some, most notable openSUSE itself. Is this what you were expecting, should I go ahead with that?

Ok, that is done. What should happen now, or what should I do next?

Also, can you give me a summary of your thought process, what you were hoping we’d achieve? I’d like to understand. Thanks.
