I bought a new laptop with 64 bit SLED preinstalled, but I want to install OpenSuse. When I put in OpenSuse CD and chose Install, it shows me that progress bar and just hangs there, HDD and CD even stop spinning after a while, i tried other distros and installed without any problems, I even tried different dvd’s of OpenSuse but still same thing happens, and when I tried 32 bit version of OpenSuse it also installed correctly.
Are there any special boot parameters that could help me or something else? And finally is there any use of having 64 bit version, or should I just stick to 32 bit version?
I have a Intel core 2 duo processor, 2GHZ with 2 mb cache, 4 gb DDR2, 500GB HDD 7200rpm…
Did you do the media check? Maybe a bad download or burn.
Yes, I tried media check, I even downloaded the installation again, and burned it another DVD but the same thing happened again
You can try Live CD instead of DVD ATM, and do a media check too b4 booting from the CD.
Check the md5sum for the ISO.
Also you can check verify the DVD/CD in the burner software to check that burned process is completed successfully.
Just a thought but I have had similar problems in the past with Mandrake. I ended up just sticking with 32 bit. The Mandrake installer when used in verbose mode always hung at the same point. It seemed that it could not read certain files from the ram disk. You might ask someone how to do a verbose install with SUSE and see if the problem lies in the same place. It seems unlikely but at least it is a start to figure it out.

You’ve tried both cd and dvd install, is that correct? Did it stop at the same step of the install on both? What is the source of your cd/dvd (downloaded & burned or premade)?
What brand and model of laptop is this? Have you contacted them about this? If they install linux on a for sale product, they should be able to help.
