opensuse 11.1 wmv in firefox

Hallo,

I have just installed opensuse 11.1 (32bit) and I have tried to “enable” the multimedia stuffs. Especially my aim is to let firefox open and show all web pages no matter which multimedia content they contain.

I have followed the same procedure which I have used with opensuse 11.0 with 100% success (all tested multimedia contents in firefox under opensuse 11.0 are correctly shown). The result is that in opensuse 11.1 I get to work in firefox most multimedia contents except the wmv.

What I have done is to add the packman repository and install/reinstall from packman the following packages (and let all the dependencies be resolved in “favor” of packman against the official opensuse repository):

  • xine
  • w32codec-all
  • libxine1
  • xine-ui
  • kaffeine
  • kaffeine-mozilla
  • mplayer
  • kmplayer
  • mplayerplug-in

The result for what concernes wmv files: I manage to play them with both keffeine amd mplayer if they are on the HD, but if I try to access a page with am wmv content: kaffeine starts and quits with a plugin error.

what’s wrong?
my impression is that in opensuse 11.0 firefox uses always mplayer embedded in firefox (mplayperplug-in) to open wmv, on the contrary opesuse 11.1 it uses kaffeine.

Can this be the problem? kaffeine firefox plugin?
How to make kaffeine firefox plugin read the wmv in firefox?
Otherwise how to force firefox to use mplayperplug-in instead of kaffeine to open wmv contents?

IMHO, the kaffeine and xine plugins for the browser are not
that stable. While I prefer xine/kaffeine as a standalone player,
just use mplayerplug-in for your browser plugin.

You could also try the vlc-mozillaplugin. I’ve used it for wmv streaming sites to watch videos and haven’t had a problem yet. You can test it out here National Geographic Channel

Good Luck,

Sorry, to answer your original question.

Click edit, then choose preferences. Click on the Applications tab and search for Windows Media Video. Then from there you can choose which plugin to use.

I have already tried it (to change the plugin used in the Preferencies → Application) but it looks like it ignores me: it kept on starting kaffeine.

I must admit I didn’t restart firefox afterwards, is this the problem?

Anyway which one to use?

/usr/lib/browser-plugins/mplayerplug-in-dvx.so
/usr/lib/browser-plugins/mplayerplug-in-dvx.xpt
/usr/lib/browser-plugins/mplayerplug-in-gmp.so
/usr/lib/browser-plugins/mplayerplug-in-gmp.xpt
/usr/lib/browser-plugins/mplayerplug-in-qt.so
/usr/lib/browser-plugins/mplayerplug-in-qt.xpt
/usr/lib/browser-plugins/mplayerplug-in-rm.so
/usr/lib/browser-plugins/mplayerplug-in-rm.xpt
/usr/lib/browser-plugins/mplayerplug-in-wmp.so
/usr/lib/browser-plugins/mplayerplug-in-wmp.xpt
/usr/lib/browser-plugins/mplayerplug-in.so
/usr/lib/browser-plugins/mplayerplug-in.xpt

Another question: well if firefox has more plugings to choose from, which one/ how does it chooses one at the very first?
Why on opensuse 11.0 with exactly the same pakages installed it chooses mplayerplug-in and in opensuse 11.1 chooses kaffeine?
