Hi,
has anybody a running opensuse 11.1 system with a Radeon 9250 or 9200?
I’ve tried it for 5 days now using all possible combinations (as far as I know) in xorg.conf - without success.
If someone has success: could you pls. post your xorg.conf here and tell me/us how you managed it (special kernel etc.)?
Thanks.
So you have no desktop at all? Or you’re not getting the resolution you want? Or no 3d? What specifically is the problem?
You need to provide a few basic details of what your problem is if you expect anyone to help.
And have you tryed ?
Oficial ?
OpenSource radeon ?
The ATI Proprietary driver won’t work for a 9250, you need a 9500 or better.
However, the open source driver that comes with Suse should work, though I don’t know if you’ll get any 3D with it.
Sorry, here are the details:
I get no desktop. The cursor appears for one or two seconds in the top left corner, but the screen left black and shortly afterwards the monitor displays “no signal”.
There is no chance to switch into a console by Ctrl-Alt-Fn.
I use the open source radeon driver and I have a ASRock K8Upgrade-NF3 board.
However there’s a trick: when I boot into windows first and then do a restart into openSuSE 11.1 everthing works fine.
But that couldn’t be the solution !
It seems as if the card is not initialized correctly during the 11.1 startup …
Any ideas?
could you post the content of /var/log/Xorg.0.log ?
Probably a buggy bios, following you description ?
(when it starts ok and when it doesn’t start at all)
From the boot menu choose “Failsafe Mode” and log in as root and run this command:
sax2 -r -m 0=radeon
Could it be a hardware problem, e.g. the card not being properly seated in the AGP slot?
Have you tried a reinstall?
Just a question: when it doesn’t start, I have no chance to switch into a console. So I can’t open the /var/log/Xorg.0.log file in this case. Will the log be backed up during the next startup? Name of the backup file?
@foresthill: it couldn’t be a hardware problem, because windows always starts up correctly.
@foresthill: just to add - I can start the system in failsafe mode and get a desktop but w/o 3D. When I try the sax2 command, the system hangs as well.
Your right! the propietary driver does not work and the one that comes with SuSE works… limited but it works and Yes you get desktop effects!! but iI think (Im not sure) there are some htings you must do to have a better compiz experience.
I read it somewhere and now I dont find it now
As requested, here are the Xorg.0.log’s (I recognized that the old log is backed up as Xorg.0.log.old, so I can deliver both versions).
I’m not sure if you really need the complete log file (which has a size of 14 kB), so here’s where the log stops during the unsuccessful startup:

I looked in it more detailed and made a diff between the two logs.
There’s another difference, which might cause the problem:

Any ideas?
Can I make a couple suggestions?
Forget about 3D, forget about desktop effects, forget about editing your xorg file.
Do a clean re-install, and get your proper resolution set (if needed) by running the sax2 command I gave earlier. Then LEAVE IT ALONE.
If this fails, I would go back to OpenSuse 11, and do a clean install, run the sax2 -r -m 0=radeon command and leave good enough alone there.
Your card is not supported by ATI in Linux, for now at least. Sorry, but it’s the painful truth. However, the open source radeon driver is almost as good, and much better than nothing.
(rant over)
True. With that graphic is better to forget desktop effects…
But try a clean install.
Although it seems you have a buggy bios … in my asus K8N is possible to have Direct rendering because a bug like that, i can’t even address memory for AGP…
Just to recap: my initial question was, if anybody has a running opensuse 11.1 with a Radeon 92xx installed.
If the only solution is to switch back to 11.0, I will completely forget about opensuse and move over to (k)ubuntu where everything works “out of the box”.
Hi,
I was using OpenSUSE 11.1 on Mobility Radeon 9200 until today, when I updated kernel, xorg and ATI drivers. From now on, my system locks up completely when I start the X server. I had to manually uninstall ATI drivers and fix some links to X server, but my system performs terribly slow now (using KDE 4.2).
Hallo,
running Opensuse 11.1 with Radeon 9250/AGP, Xorg 7.4, KDE 4.1.3, 2 Screen Sony Multiscan E530 without problem.
By a new Install, is only one Screen on.
The second screen will be active only with screen setting in system-setting.
Here the xorg.conf:
