opensuse 11.1 on laptops + hard lock

dear all,
i have been using opensuse for a long time, and in my laptop opensuse
11.0 was worked fine, then i updated to 11.1 and it started showing
strange behavior.
(my laptop is acer ASPIRE 5052 NWXMI)

here are the problems i face

1.Most of the time there will be a hard lock, and i had to force off,
by pressing the power button.
2.sound become very low.

fooling around with the first problem, by disabling some wireless
modules, some how i managed to get the machine up

i found that whenever i start X window, it makes a hard lock.
so every time i had to push the powerbutton for 20 sec to switch of and
reboot again.

did anyone experienced a same kind of problems??
funny thing is i installed suse11.1 to a new sony vaio laptop,
(vaio VGNCS115J) as soon as installed cheese, it locked the X, for some
time i could move the mouse. keyboard dead.
and sound very low
so i disabled wireless and webcam modules and graphics is up

DID ANYONE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM?
will installing the security update solve the problem?

if needed, i can upload my lsmod, lspci and dmesg outputs.

my next aim wil be to compile a custom kernel and if doesnt work i had
to stick with slackware.

please !! any help is appreciated
regards

I have openSUSE-11.1 running fine on my Dell Studio 15 laptop. No hard
lockups.

Could it be that you have a problem (in both cases) with your graphic
driver, causing X not to come up properly? Do you get the hard lock
with safe settings (fail safe) ?

thank you,
oldcpu, that you responded to the thread.
i dont feel like going to 11.0 again, so please help me out.

Even 10.3 and 11.0 worked well on this laptop. :expressionless:
i installed 11.0 on a dell machine, and everything worked, even the web
cam.

safe setting also caused hardlock in the vaio laptop, which is having
an intel graphix

my acer laptop has an ati graphics, here is the lspci

hi,
while installing opensuse 11.1(openSUSE-11.1-DVD-x86_64.iso),only the
welcome screen comes and then the system hangs…
i pressed Ctrl+Alt+F2 …the cursor stop after the line…
starting udev… udevd-event[71]: “sbin/modprobe” abnormal exit

i tried to reinstall it ,but this time i changed the kernel option from
DEFAULT to NO ACPI…
everything was working fine …,i aborted the installation to find out
the consequences of installing opensuse 11.1 with NO ACPI…

if possible can u tell me my present problems with MODPROBE
,ACPI…and how could i solve them…

My system configuration…
ASPIRE 5052nmxmi
AMD TURION 64X2 MOBILE TECHNOLOGY
ATI RADEON Xpress 1100

thank you all
finally i figured out the problem.
when i tried a new account it worked

first i checked with root account and then i found that it wasnt
hardlocking. so i created a new account and there is no more hard lock.

probably some configuration file in home dir might have caused the
problem. or some temporary files in /tmp corresponding to the user might
have caused the problem.

now i am happy

hello adityag,
i have the same laptop as yours, but i installed x86 version of
opensuse11.1. actually i upgraded from 11.0 where everything was
working. but sound was less

now i tried configuring sound and it is too low. regarding acpi, i
have no pro with acpi, without acpi we may have some problem,

have you installed suse on your machine??
install using no acpi, later on if needed we can use apm for the power
management.
u can use the brocken module option to stop loading unwanted modules,
any way install suse first.
regards

now i have problem with my sound.
can it be fixed??
here is the details

Code:

tux:~# head -n 1 /proc/asound/card0/codec#*

Codec: Conexant ID 2bfa

==> /proc/asound/card0/codec#1 <==

i tried putting various model options but nothing works.

skips? Sound only in some applications? No system sounds? … I’m
not very good at guessing.

model option in this example of your /etc/modprobe.d/sound file. You
should only apply one model option at a time, and having a # in front
simply comments out the model option. … I’m not clear as to what you
are trying to illustrate? Also, it is important you do not keep backup
files in /etc/modprobe.d directory, as they could be mistakenly run as
well to “mis-configure” your sound.

In order for me to help with sound, I need the URL provided by running
the script:
::/usr/sbin/alsa-info.sh::
just the URL. None of the other stuff.

I also need to know what sound related/relevant rpms you have
installed, …ie the output of:
::rpm -qa | grep alsa
rpm -qa | grep pulse
rpm -q libasound2
uname -a
cat /etc/modprobe.d/sound::

dear oldcpu,
i forgot to mention the problem correctly.

  1. sound : low sound, very difficult to hear.

  2. the commented lines are commented itself, i tried both the model
options, it showed junk dmesg errors and didnt even shown the
    /cat/proc/asound cards

and why it is taking codec#1 as Realtek ALC883, ?? will this have any
effect.

  1. about details : my previous post have few details, this details are

Typically with Low sound, most of the time one just needs to go to YAST

both PCM and Master Volume up very very high. Then close YaST. Then
open one’s Mixer, and move the volume levels there (for both Master and
PCM volume) up high to a satisfactory level.
