I’m trying to upgrade my 10.3 to 11.1, doing a clean install: having backup copies of everything and wiping all the old stuff out. Checked md5sum. Booting from live CD starts out OK, but after lines
“Loading CPUFreq modules…CPUFreq not supported
creating X configuration”
installation stops for quite a long time, and then screen turns into a mess and stays that way.
I tried changing the video mode (in the installation screen) to 1024x768, 800x600, VESA and Text Mode. Also I tried “Fail Safe mode” and also I tried installation with ACPI off. The result was always the same (on some occasions the mess was partly black and white, that was the only difference). Even when I was using “Text mode” there was the line “creating X configuration”, which as far as I understand, means that Suse is trying to start the graphical interface (am I not correct?).
The graphics card is integrated Intel i845 and the monitor is LG Flatron 1510S, with SuSe 10.3 I am using the driver for LG LGP 1024x768.
Mother board is Intel D845GLLY with Intel® 845GL Chipset and Pentium-4 1,6 Gb and 512 RAM
Since you’ve already got your backup, why not skip the Live CD? In the past, some people, me included, had trouble doing an install with it. If you are able, burn the DVD and do a clean install.
I have an old, low-spec, test machine with no DVD or the ability to boot from an external DVD. As I think about it… that also has Intel integrated graphics… anyway, I could not get a live CD to install, even though that worked on earlier versions. As a last resort, I downloaded and burned the mini-iso and did a network install. There are so many warnings about the network install that I worried. But, I had no reason. It worked well.
However, I did pick the wrong iso. :\ I ended up with 11.2 Alpha0 and KDE 4.2. Actually, it works really well, but don’t use it for your main machine since they may break it with any update. Be careful which min-iso you pick and go for it.
What is a mini-iso? And where to get it?
I don’t have a DVD on my box, so that is not an option.
Then, getting another graphics card and installing it would be a possibility? But how would I know in advance, whether it works or not?

It is only 90 MB. Don’t forget, you need a good internet connection for this… wired not wireless. AND you need to have your stuff backed up elsewhere in case you run into problems!
I downloaded the mini-iso. But I still am a bit hesitant about the network install.
I thought I would install another graphics card and see if installing from the live CD would work that way. Then I realized that my motherboard does not have an AGP bus (the integrated graphics card obviously is AGP), the only buses are PCI.
If I’d get an old PCI graphics card, and would manage to install SuSe 11.1 with it, do you think that I’d be able to fix the problem with the integrated graphics card later? Installing a suitable driver or something?
What would actually be the difference between network install and live-CD install in this case? Would a different set of drivers be downloaded in the network install?
