openSuse 11.1 Gnome: impressed!

Hi,

I used to use Ubuntu before.
Recently I’ve heard about openSuse. I decided to give it a try. As a result, I’m really impressed, and I personally love it very much!:stuck_out_tongue: I Love Grub’s interface that looks ugly with Ubuntu. I love elegant theme. More importantly, I don’t have to spend a lot of time to configure lots of stuffs (like I did in Ubuntu) after installation such as trackpoint scrolling, problem with browsing firefox in full screen mode, true type fonts, etc… I think that I’ll stick with openSuse until the rest of my life rotfl!
Good job, openSuse developers! Way to go…!

Cheers!

Glad to hear that

Welcome to forums

are the ttf installed by default in opensuse?

For legal reasons these fonts are not present on cd/dvd, but when you run online update, you can download a script that automatically retrieves and installs ttf.

The extra-fronts are at the end of the list in yast…in the group marked with a star!

I don’t know why I’ve got them. Probably, online update handles it. By the way, I’m just a linux newbie :sarcastic:

Welcome to the forums, tisungho. I agree, Gnome in Suse is fabulous. I was impressed the second I used it and the more I use it the more impressed I’ve become.

euwww GNOME…

Hi,

I have recently started evaluating openSUSE after having some real bad experiences with Kubuntu 8.10.

I have to agree with the original post, I am IN LOVE with my openSUSE 11.0 installation running GNOME Desktop Theme Shiki-Wise with the GNOME-Colors icon set. I would highly recommend this desktop theme/icon set. It looks very sleek and professional. Found out about it here.

I really like what I see so far with openSUSE. I just might be a convert.

Thanks,
John

Yeah I like that theme, I am using it also in xfce 4.6

Also in the OpenSuSe Gnome club. I was a fan of KDE, but then I got hit by the 4.x bus and never recovered.

Stuff in OpenSuSe Gnome is just so…smooth. Love my Black/White desktop theme.

Keep up the great work, guys!

What is xfce?

Thanks,
John

Xfce - Desktop Environment

Hummm… ok. Thanks for the link. So, I would run either Xfce or Gnome but not both right?

Thanks,
John

Pretty much, you can install it (and kde 4 as well) and choose whatever you want when you log in.

True!

I’ve installed openSuSE Gnome and KDE 4.2 on this lappy. Supposedly, you can run them both - at the same time - but I’ve never tried this (yet). I ran across a HowTo the other day that guides you through doing this, but I really don’t see an advantage to running both at the same time, so…

One benefit I’ve noticed, having both Gnome and KDE 4.2 installed (multi-booted on the same drive)…

I can run any number of Gnome apps on KDE 4.2 - such as Evolution Mail and Totem.

Maybe this is normal - I dunno - but it sure makes things a lot nicer running Gnome apps on KDE 4.2. It’s the best of all possible worlds, IMHO! :good:

The software installation tools should sort any dependencies when you install software, allowing you to run gnome application under KDE or the other way around.
Or run either of them under XFCE.

‘Native’ applications are preferred as they’ll take up less resources by making use of things supplied by the desktop environment from what I understand. Though nowadays where computers are so powerful the fact that they look more in line with the rest of the DE might be more important then the resources they consume for most.

Thanks! That’s good to know…

I was going back n’ forth between KDE 4.1 and Gnome - and Gnome always came out the winner (in my mind). When they came out with KDE 4.2 a couple of weeks ago, I was shocked at the improvement(s) - they actually fixed it! Amazing!

The thing was, all the good apps (in my mind) were designed for Gnome, so once again I was shocked to find they would work in KDE 4.2 when I installed them both on my drive.

The only thing I dearly miss (about Gnome) is the application launcher. The KDE 4.x launcher requires too many links to get to where you wanna go - reminds me of Windows - having to click 6 buttons to open a program or whatever! :stuck_out_tongue:

Gnome rocks. It looks a lot better than KDE and it’s been out longer! :stuck_out_tongue:

Try typing in the search field and you’ll have the application you want in seconds. Rightclick > Add to favorites for anything you frequently use and you’re all set.

I haven’t clicked in my launcher menu to get to an application for a long long time, just type in the first 3-4 letters and hit enter, or arrow down a few times and then enter.

Don’t forget to contribute in the screenshot forum then, as it’s been heavily dominated by KDE for the last few months.
