OpenSUSE 11.0 YAST installer reports 3.75GB / 4.0GB RAM

Running the 64bit KDE4 OpenSUSE 11.0 (Gold Master) Live CD, the YAST installer reports my system has 3.75GB, while sysinfo report 3.9GB. Although they are both wrong, since it should be 4GB I can imagine this has something to do with some RAM being reserved for the kernel and such while the live CD is running. However shouldn’t YAST give the proper size regardsless. Before you know it you’ll have people thinking they are installing a 32bit system when they clearly downloaded 64bit.

I assume once the installation is done it’ll have access to all 4GB of RAM but I thought I’d mention it as perhaps people will be as confused about this like I was (I actually did a uname -a to verify I was running a 64bit kernel):

uname -a

Probably some parts of it are reserved during the installation, and during normal running. There are some reserved areas so in general you will not be able to use 100% RAM. Also the BIOS can reserve some areas, e.g. some motherboards use main RAM as video RAM.

I don’t recall that happening during my install of 10 64-bit… Have
you tried the ‘free’ command and, if so, what does it show?

Good luck.

Exactly the same behavior on my machine. While installing Yast reports 3,75 GB of RAM and after that opensuse 11 will show me 3,9 GB Ram of 4.0 installed RAM.

This is a long shot, but could it have anything to do with the issue that I had here.

I didn’t notice the ram reported during install, but after I had the system up and running, it reported a gig less of ram then I actually had.

In the end I had to uninstall and reinstall the pae Kernel.
