OpenSUSE 11.0 dual monitors DVI+VGA on Dell Optiplex GX270

Hi guys

I’m trying to get dual monitors on my Dell Optiplex GX270. It has on-board Intel 865G chipset with a VGA socket and a little Silicon Image Carrera 164 DVI extension.

Currently I have it in dual boot, OpenSUSE and Windows XP. The two monitors seem to be working fine in Win, but I only managed to get one of two working at the same time.

My current /etc/X11/xorg.conf:

I tried changing the config manually as found on google, etc, creating two Monitor, two Screen entries. Unfortunately, it either had no effect or the X server did not start.

I am not quite sure about the SaX options in the config. Here is what I’ve got in /var/log/Xorg.0.log:

(II) intel(0): RandR 1.2 enabled, ignore the following RandR disabled message.
(**) Option "dpms"
(**) intel(0): DPMS enabled
(II) intel(0): Set up overlay video
(II) intel(0): direct rendering: Disabled
(WW) intel(0): Option "SaXDualHead" is not used
(WW) intel(0): Option "SaXDualMonitorVendor" is not used
(WW) intel(0): Option "SaXDualOrientation" is not used
(WW) intel(0): Option "SaXDualResolution" is not used
(WW) intel(0): Option "SaXDualMode" is not used
(WW) intel(0): Option "SaXDualHSync" is not used

(WW) intel(0): Option "SaXDualVSync" is not used
(WW) intel(0): Option "SaXExternal" is not used
(WW) intel(0): Option "PreferredMode" is not used
(--) RandR disabled

Here’s a cut from /var/log/Xorg.0.log where it detects the Sil164 extension:

(II) intel(0): I2C bus "CRTDDC_A" initialized.
(II) intel(0): I2C bus "DVODDC_D" initialized.
(II) Loading sub module "sil164"
(II) LoadModule: "sil164"
(II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules//drivers/sil164.so
(II) Module sil164: vendor="X.Org Foundation"
        compiled for 1.4.0.90, module version = 1.0.0
ABI class: X.Org Video Driver, version 2.0
(II) intel(0): I2C bus "DVOI2C_E" initialized.
(II) intel(0): I2C device "DVOI2C_E:SIL164 TMDS Controller" registered at address 0x70.
(II) intel(0): Output TMDS using monitor section EXT
(**) intel(0): Option "PreferredMode" "1280x1024"

Finally, I tried to use xrandr manually:

$ xrandr --output VGA --auto --left-of TMDS
xrandr: cannot find crtc for output VGA

However, I can switch from one output to another using xrandr:

$ xrandr --output TMDS --off
$xrandr --output VGA --auto

Any ideas/suggestions/help are much appreciated!

The two monitors seem to be working fine in Win, but I only managed to get one of two working at the same time.

I meant to say the monitors work perfectly well and simultaneously on Windows, and only one on SUSE.

Try this m8, usually works for me

In Sax, when you open it, on the Monitor tab you should see a section titled Dual Head Mode

Select the Activate Dual Head Mode box and click on the Configure button, in there you can choose whether to clone the display to the second monitor or stretch the desktop display across both monitors (Xinerama)

Ecky

Hi Ecky

I’ve tried this thing with SaX2. When the Dual Head Mode switch is off I have only the VGA output working. When it’s on I’ve got only DVI, but never both of them.

Thanks for your reply anyway.

I’ve managed to get the two screens working using the i810 driver instead of “intel”. But now I can only get them in 1024x768 and only cloned.

Any ideas at all? These forums seem to be a bit quiet :frowning:
