openSUSE 11.0 64bit, or 11.1 BETA 4 64bit

Hi

I’ve bin using Linux OS for some time now… there was a couple of distros… I had my ups and downs (going back to windows, then back to Linux)…
It all started with Fedora, then Debian for some time. Now I’m using the newest Ubuntu distro, and I’m quite happy, but… yes, there is always something missing. So I’m still looking for the thing… and here comes openSUSE;)… as far as I can see, this could be the thing…

So I have some questions;)

  1. Like in the subject… I’m not afraid of testing new software, looking for solutions on the web…reading, learning about my system. So I’m asking… wich one of the 2 mentioned above? Will the 11.0 64bit release suite my, or should I go for the 11.1 64bit BETA distro? I’ve checked the LIVE CD releases of both of them, and for now I like the 11.1 better.

  2. The support and the community for openSUSE… how does it look compared to Ubuntu for example? I’ve been using Ubuntu for some time now, and the community is a major factor in plus… You can find everything… guides, tutorials, HOWTO’s… I’ve surfed the web for equal openSUSE support, and had trouble finding it:(… maybe I’m just looking in the wrong direction, or not digging deep enough?;)…

so please help if You can… thx

So, regarding 11.0 or 11.1, if you aren’t afraid of 11.1 then I’d go to
that. The final release is on its way and should be much nicer. This
also gives you the latest packages, which is nice, and chances are 11.1
users will increase significantly once 11.1 is out of beta.

Regarding the community… these forums are very active and probably
the best place I’ve found (I haven’t looked hard at all, though) for
SUSE-specific stuff. With that said I have found help in many other
distributions’ forums for help with my SUSE systems as well. As an
example I was setting up Broadcom (bleh) wireless for my wife on a new
laptop and the install didn’t take care of me out of the box… so I
went to Google, put in some decent search terms, and found the help I
needed in an Ubuntu forum. Ubuntu definitely has a great community too
but part of the greatness of Linux (and OSS in general) is that the code
is often the same, as you probably know guessing by your post. So while
ndiswrapper ships with Ubuntu and SUSE, a problem in SUSE can be fixed
by somebody having the same problem in Ubuntu (with some changes at
times, but this was all configuration stuff).

Anyway, for me the community is a huge reason I love Linux but I’ve
stopped taking note of which branches are biggest for help since I seem
to use (and try to contribute) to many of them.

Just my thoughts…

Good luck.

Hmm… changing my mind about the community… it’s huge… I’ve gone a little deeper within google search results, and bang… a miracle;)

So many forums, so many blogs… and the best thing… on the openSUSE.org site You can find everything sorted very clearly and logicaly… amazing:D

Building my web links base for opensuse right now;)

Hi kamilsok, Welcome to The Opensuse Forums!
My recommendation would be to go with 11.0 for now it’s the stable.
11.1 is a beta as you know & they can be IRRITATING!!:’(>:( So if you don’t mind the “Beta Blues” then go for 11.1 still though to get used to the Suse way I’d still go 11.0 if I was you.

Don’t know yet, which one to choose…
I’m divided between stability, support… and discovering the new;)

I’m going to reinstall the system on Monday probably, so there is still some time left to make the choice;)
