I am not able to boot into openSUSE 10.2 after I installed a nVidia EVGA GeForce 6300 PCI card. X will not start, but I can get text mode started. The graphical mode start-up freezes at AGP Gart. Apparently suse is expecting to only see my mobo’s Intel built-in graphics (915i or something).
I use Linux for music recording (built up suse with JackLab repositories). I dual-boot, and have to continue, because I bought a Windows-only program that requires a “real” video card.
I would prefer not to update suse because it works and I don’t want to screw it up or spend a lot of time on a new install.
Does anyone have a nVidia driver that will work with 10.2? I run a real time kernel (something like 2.5.19-5-rt).
I tried using YaST in text mode, and it will not install the nVidia drivers citing a dependency issue that I was unable to resolve.
unfortunately you have installed a version (10.2) which is no longer
supported and there are therefore no security updates or software
repositories (and has not been since november of last year) from
which to pull…which is why YaST can’t resolve its issues…
and, 10.3 will go unsupported at the end of THIS month…
you should install 11.0, 11.1 or wait a couple of weeks and install 11.2
see http://en.opensuse.org/SUSE_Linux_Lifetime and pick the lifetime
you can live with…right now a particular version has a life of about
18 months…at the end of which there will be no more updates, etc…
