When I’ve installed openSUSE 11.3, OpenOffice was asking me to install JRE, and I did it. lol!
However, next time i run it, it crashed without any error log. When I run it again, it sad a couple of time that JRE is defective, and asked me to reinstall it again. Eons passed, but my patience was rewarded. OpenOffice.org Impress was up. but just for a few seconds. Then it crashed again, and left no signs of life.
I’ve repeated the same cycle few times… Then I decided to search for a solution, and read topics where similar problems were discussed. One solution was to expand my swap memory, and the another one was to install an older version of OO. I wasn’t very eager to install an older version of OO, so I tried to expand swap memory by cutting memory from the other partitions. I found reference that swap memory should be twice bigger than RAM. Since i have 512 + 256 MB RAM, I’ve typed 1536 MB as a new value for swap memory. Error appeared that value of swap memory must be between 42MB and 684MB. I’m not sure about the second number, but it was between 600 and 700… And now I’m here.
I must get OpenOffice.org working as soon as possible, because it’s very important for my work.
I’m running 64bit openSUSE 11.3 on AMD Sempron 2800+ with 768MB RAM
using OpenOffice 3.2.1.4-1.2 and java-1_6_0-sun
I’m rather afraid you have gone beyond the point of no return.
Out of all those listed as Build Service (except mozilla) do you know what you added them for?
I’m trying to get a picture of what might break if we work on this. And who told you to change the priority settings from the default 99?
I thik I’ve added 'em for updating or installing programs which are mentioned in the names of the repositories.
Those repositories were offered as comunity repositories, so I add them rather than searching for a repositories and addiding them via url.
I’ve changed priority settings to see how does it work.
I didn’t install anything from OpenOffice repo, so I don’t see what repos have to do with OpenOffice crash.
What makes difference if it is OpenOffice from BuildService? It interests me…
Try this on the office repo
Open Software Manager and switch packages to that repo, like this principle: ImageBam - Fast, Free Image Hosting and Photo Sharing
(obviously that’s a different repo) but you see what I mean
Build Service, especially OOffice can be trouble, but try it
I take it nothing changed with OOffice.
Try doing this in a terminal. (I have to go out for a few hours so don’t panic)
mv .ooo3 .ooo3-bak
Now try office
All your settings are in the .ooo3-bak
So we can bring stuff back if needed.
If it still fails, we need to get serious - But as I’m out for a bit, try creating a new user and see if you get the same results.
If it still fails we’ll get to the serious bit.
I run OO Impress. Loading took more time than before installing openSUSE 11.3
It started with presentation wizard, as usual. I just clicked on “Create” button.
Then error appeared: JRE is defective OpenOffice.org requires a Java runtime environment (JRE) to perform this task. The selected JRE is defective. Please select another version, or install a new JRE and select it under Tools-Options-OpenOffice.org-Java
I clicked “Ok” button a couple of times and Impress was up. I even made a short presentation.
Then I tried to open another presentation without closing the one I was working on, and it crashed. There was error log: “Due to unexpected error OpenOffice.org crashed. All files you’ve been working on…” There wasn’t any useful information why it crashed.
I ran OpenOffice again, but after pressing “Create” button, and a few JRE defective errors it crashed instantly.
I found this topic earlier: Java makes OpenOffice crash
The problem seem to me similar to one I have, because it’s about Java and OOffice. I have 768 MB RAM, but only about 650 MB swap.
I think that the problem could lie there. For instance, when I open many tabs in Firefox, when I read news, or in such situations, it also crashes.
However, it all worked fine on openSUSE 11.0 with the same RAM and swap, and the rest of the hardware.
I removed all repositories , an now only these are left:

I run OpenOffice.org Impress, but the same scenario repeats.
First time when I run OO, Presentation Wizard appeared, I clicked on “Create”, Impress iz up, and then it crashess immediatelly. Only there wasn’t JRE problem.
Second time when I run OO, it was the same untill “Create” button. Then JRE error appeared two times and after that was nothing.
