I have all of my files stored on my winxp desktop (Please don’t knock me for this, I know it’s tempting). Anyhow when I attempt to access the files with my suse laptop the files do not open. Sound files open, video files open, and image files open but msoffice files do not open with openoffice without transferring the file to my suse laptop first. Can someone try to help me correct this?

It works fine here. OOo just asks for the samba username and password but
that’s all. At least under opensuse 10.3 and OOo 2.3 I can browse the files
from samba source and double-clicking on them just ask if I want to open
them with OOo.
OTOH, if you want opening the file from any OOo application itself there is
a trick: open any OOo program (i.e., writer) and go to File / open and
select “network folders or remote folders”. Now, on the location bar on the
top, just remove the text there and write down:
smb://192.168.0.1
(adjust the ip to the one that fits your windows xp machine)
And just browse to find the document you want to open, select it and click
o.k.
Next time you open that OOo program you will be able to directly select the
above location (smb://ip) from the dropdown menu.
