opening pdf attachement in thunderbird 10.0.2

Hi All,

Running 64 bit opensuse 12.1 kde. When I try to open pdf attachements in thunderbird 10.0.2 the only option it provides me is to use GIMP. Okular is not an option nor is there an option to browse for an application. Furthermore, the attachments tab under preferences in thunderbird is completely empty with no appearant way to add an entry. In my system settings under file associations, pdf has both Okular and GIMP. I removed GIMP and saved the settings yet nothing has changed in thunderbird. I have to admit to being quite frustrated. Web searches have turned up other people with this issue but either there is no solution or things magically started working again. Help is very much appreciated.

Thanks

This is really the same problem as in an earlier thread:
http://forums.opensuse.org/english/get-technical-help-here/applications/472935-thunderbird-has-lost-its-kde-integration.html

There should at least be an option to save to disk, and you can then read it there.

If you install “evince”, that might show up as the preferred option. That’s what I am seeing in firefox for pdf files. I prefer okular, but evince does a pretty decent job of it.

Thank you for pointing out this other thread. Yes, there is an option to save to disk and like you, I prefer Okular to Evince. Therefore neither solution is appealing. Darn.

Edit: Installed Evince. Still the only option is GIMP.

Maybe I am seeing evince (for firefox) only because I have Gnome installed. I use KDE, but keep Gnome around for occasional trying other things. But I wouldn’t suggest installing gnome just for that - it’s not worth that much effort, and I can’t guarantee that would work for tbird.

The file where TB stores this list of applications assigned to
attachments is mimeTypes.rdf (it is in my case in
~/.thunderbird/d3y2l235.default of course for your system the name of
the profile is different just look into ~/.thunderbird)

The setting for ocular in it is

<RDF:Description RDF:about="urn:mimetype:handler:application/pdf"
NC:alwaysAsk="false">
<NC:externalApplication
RDF:resource="urn:mimetype:externalApplication:application/pdf"/>
<NC:possibleApplication
RDF:resource="urn:handler:local:/usr/bin/okular"/>
</RDF:Description>

you may want to close TB and set this entry yourself in that file.

While I have a similar directory (~/.thunderbird/55c6gt1o.default), there was no mimeTypes.rdf file. So I created it and used the code you provided.Alas, nothing. Still GIMP and only GIMP. Thank you for the suggestion though.

That will not work since you created no valid xml file.

This is the complete file
http://susepaste.org/10949775
you can use it as some template.

I had the similar trouble with Firefox 10 and tried replacing the .rdf
file with a version that had worked with FF9. Unfortunately, it did not
work; the defaults seemed to be coming from somewhere else.

I seem luckier than the OP in that, when I click on the hyperlink and get
the window open, I can click on the bar next to “open with” and get the
drop-down menu, choose “open with …”, and search for the program I need
in /usr/bin/, “okular” in this case.

FF10 and TB10 are a mess. Let’s hope 11 is better.

Hmm, the file I posted is from a working TB 10.0.2, so I would have
expected it works when copied.
