Opening Dolphin fails about 40% of the time!

About 40% of the time when I try to open Dolphin (clicking the widget on the taskbar) I get launch feedback but it never opens Dolphin. If I then click it again, this time it will open. Where can I look in some log to find what error might be happening?

Open a terminal and type

dolphin

It just hangs forever when I do that.

Post result of:

zypper lr -d
kde4-config -v

Some people have reported dolphin crashes being fixed by disabling Nepomuk. Worth a shot…

how do i do that?

System Settings
Advanced Tab
Desktop search

It’s already disabled, so that’s not it.

Qt: 4.5.3
KDE: 4.3.1 (KDE 4.3.1) "release 6"
kde4-config: 1.0

That looks OK except you have VideoLan enabled. It should be off as in No|No
Then do this:
http://tinyurl.com/yejwull

Though it’s unrelated to your issue.

Were you asking / did you try / updating kde4?? I seem to recall something??

Ok what version of yast are you using?? the one i am using doesnt have a repositories tab! :open_mouth:

Of course if you use Gnome it will look quite different unless you set gnome to use the QT interface.
Tabs only appear along the top if you have once selected it from ‘view’, after you do it once, the tab will always be there when you open software management

I actually did not update kde. Still on 4.3.1.

how do I tell if some services/apps or malware’s running? The only thing I know is “top”. Also, I have 1.4 gb ram (along with 2gb swap) but it says only 27 mb is free but other apps open, just not dolphin.

Memory use confuses many in Linux.
Post a screen of top running

You will find most of your memory is held in cache.

OK, it’s below. But how do I figure out this Dolphin issue? Is it worth it to upgrade to KDE 4.3.4 (or whatever’s the latest stable version)?

Dolphin isn’t showing in there though? Otherwise it looks ok - although it could have done with having been up and running for more than 5mins!

Didn’t I already give you direction on upgrading kde4?
Is it worth it? Yes it is IMO.

Right, but here’s my hesitation:

  • if Dolphin’s failing because my comp’s been compromised (whether by malware or just something got messed up), then I don’t want to waste my time upgrading. Instead I’d reinstall and then upgrade.

So I want to see if I can figure out this dolphin issue first (if possible).

(The reason dolphin’s not in"top" is that I shut it all down for now)

Unlikely indeed.

Upgrade may well solve the issue, but we’ll never know unless you try.

If dolphin behaves the same in a new user account it implies the problem is deeper than user settings. But as for malware? Very unlikely.

Are you on a limited internet that you don’t want to do the upgrade? It only takes about 10mins.

No, I’ll try the upgrade. I just discovered I’m having a problem with firefox too - it doesn’t shut down. When I quit firefox, sometimes the window never closes and sometimes when it does close, it leaves the icon on the taskbar’s system tray there and “ps -C firefox-bin” shows up as still running and I have to “kill -9” it. This is also pretty recent.

I’ll try the KDE update and see if it fixes it.

sigh The dolphin issue happened again. I clicked the icon on the taskbar, it showed app startup feedback and then the feedback disappeared without opening a new dolphin window. ARGH! PLEASE, someone help me diagnose this. Is there a place to look for error messages? Are they logged somewhere?

I’m beginning to think you are just unlucky and it does happen that some systems just don’t play nicely with the OS.
Have you tried Gnome BTW. Just curious.

Have you tried other distros? Did you get this happen there?
